BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 22) BE CONFERENCE IN REVIEW PLANT VECO Alaska Inc ConocoPhillips Drill Site Technologies T he VECO Alaska design team simultaneously engineered drill sites CD3 and CD4 for ConocoPhillips Alaska. Tasked with reusing project data to generate several new drill sites and reduce engineering costs to the client, VECO generated and executed a method for reusing intelligent project data. VECO’s data reuse process is much more complex than simply copying documents from one project to another. The process entails 15 steps that must be done in exact order to produce an organized package that includes correct linked documents and data. For example, component tags must be linked across all applications and all tag numbers changed to reflect the new product. VECO created eight custom tools to help with the process. Another custom routine creates a report on all material requisitions and their associated documents based on specific project attributes. Further customization produced a tool to create deliverables in the form of Excel-based reports. VECO used an autogenerated drawing feature to produce schematics, wiring and loop diagrams, and termination drawings. VECO also uses attributes to “progress” documents—updating the status of an attribute at each state in the routing process. Once a document is accepted, users are denied editing rights. VECO uses the “set final status” state to prevent further modifications. SPECIAL U.S. Army Corps of Engineers T he Army is currently undergoing a transformation to meet global changes. To provide the necessary infrastructure, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is deploying building information modeling (BIM) and ProjectWise for both its military and civil works missions. In 2006, the USACE joined Bentley’s Enterprise License Subscription (ELS) program to ensure a consistent and simplified supply chain for Bentley software, training, and implementation support. With 35,000 civilian and active military employees deployed around the globe, USACE relies on Bentley’s blended delivery method to achieve its technical excellence goals and budgetary constraints. OnDemand eLearning is a key component and is used by overseas districts nearly exclusively. Allowing personnel to train at their desks according to their workload allows USACE to eliminate travel costs and maintain staffing levels required for response to disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Bentley Institute training and implementation support have been vital in the successful deployment of these technologies. USACE depends on the Bentley Institutedeveloped, 32-hour BIM manager’s workshop and five-week BIM deployment workshop, in which training is conducted simultaneously with a real project. On-site training support provides the critical link to merge BIM capabilities with USACE business processes. In 2006, USACE conducted nearly 8,000 hours of training in 749 unique classes. GEOSPATIAL Emerson Network Power Communication FTTP Project W hen Emerson Network Power Communication installs fiber to the premises for broadband communications in new areas, it is critical that the organization obtain accurate and timely information for its clients. Emerson relies on MicroStation to do the heavy lifting of data translation, engineering, and collaboration. MicroStation allows Emerson to translate GIS files for planning purposes. The company can download public data and integrate it into MicroStation for a complete view of the existing land area and zoning requirements on one screen. 22 BE MAGAZINE | Volume 4, Issue 3
