BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 27) Keith Bentley Future Directions of Bentley’s Software Platform WATCH THE VIDEO NOW AT WWW.BE.ORG “ B entley’s CTO Keith Bentley began his 2007 BE Conference keynote by discussing how Bentley’s one-platform approach enables the company to expand its application reach in the marketplace, better leverage its research and development and testing resources, and facilitate product innovation among its developers. In addition, users benefit from: s The ability to reuse software training as they move from application to application s A breadth of solutions s Software intra-operability s Continuity and predictability of applications s File format/data longevity s Software sustainability processing power with parallel processing by CPUs, the company is working on distributed DGNs, which will increase the productivity of its users. Ultimately, he predicted, the dynamic nature of MicroStation output will lead to more deliverables that are dynamic, rather than static files or paper. In addition, the company is investigating multiple users working with the same model using peer-to-peer sessions. Looking at future innovations in Bentley software, he said the company is working on new techniques to expand the capability of DGN files, which today may contain a gigabyte of data. Another goal is to enable DGN files to hold thousands of models, which will enable remarkable new capabilities in MicroStation “Athens.” Also, in an approach analogous to increasing “Earlier we showed you a demonstration of what we call dynamic views. Dynamic views are basically a specific type of a view. You’re looking at your model, and in this window you have a particular type of view—let’s call it a section view—and over here you might have an animation view. The idea is that the model doesn’t THE VIDEO NOW AT WWW.BE.ORG WATCH change. It’s the same model, but when viewed through a specific type of view, it looks different, or it behaves differently. That’s a new concept in MicroStation “Athens” and one of the techniques that makes it possible. Another earlier demonstration showed section markers. The section markers were in one model and the section view was in another model. The only reason that was possible was because they were both editable at the same time in the same session. So that’s an improvement to the platform that I think will have lots of benefits going forward. We are now working on lots of new techniques for what we call publishing. That is, if you’ve got dynamic content, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to publish it to a static piece of paper. Well, instead, things like 3D PDFs and dynamic models that are exported to other dynamic formats are starting to become the norm. The workflow is you don’t just cut at the very end and generate static things—instead, you generate dynamic things. And MicroStation is being extended to take advantage of that capability. You also saw a demonstration of navigating through a drawing using ProjectWise, where each component in ProjectWise had some engineering content linked to it so when you clicked on it, you could follow that link that brings you to another drawing or another model, or maybe even another application. That is the kind of thing that is going to pervade a lot of the design decisions we make in the future. ” Volume 4, Issue 3 | BE MAGAZINE 27 http://stream.bentley.com/mediasite/viewer/?peid=4871a0b3-91c0-4189-bf29-3e30850b49f6
