BE Awards Category BIM for Visualization and Simulation Project Objective Design and build lakefront home using a boutique ﬁrm with the client acting as general contractor F or a young family of three with a dream, Dvorak architekti delivered a 3D model that communicated intricate requirements and ensured ﬂawless execution of a distinctive lakefront home. The home was designed to meld with the woodland surroundings of a quiet neighborhood. Working within a small footprint, Dvorak created a visually “big” house with an open ﬂoor plan and sweeping views of the lake. The single-story brick structure in the Kunratice area on the outskirts of Prague, Czech Republic, has a signiﬁcantly cantilevered rectangular steel roof, which dramatically reveals the verandas and gardens to the south. The focal point of the interior space is the combined living, dining, and kitchen area on the west end. On the east end, a long corridor accesses four lakeview bedrooms, baths, and carport. The east-west split separates public and private spaces while giving all occupants extraordinary views of the landscape. The terrace adjoining the eating area comfortably accommodates a dozen people, while the cozy terrace off the master bedroom is ﬁt for two. Principal architect Jan Dvorak began design in March 2000 by creating a 3D model on MicroStation that would serve as the main reference point throughout the project. From the ﬁrst client presentations, the vivid renderings provided enough detail to allow someone with no construction industry experience interpret the plans and supervise the builders. When construction commenced in June 2001, the 3D model also gave construction workers realworld views of what they were building. “Using MicroStation as the central—and only—CAD platform enabled us to effortlessly integrate all design disciplines and lead to the total coordination and integration of design input,” Dvorak explained. “The result was a complete understanding of the building and its components. The construction was completed in stages due to ﬁnancial constraints of the client.” Visualizing design detail The MicroStation platform allowed Dvorak to quickly translate and import AutoCAD drawings submitted by structural, civil, and electrical designers.
