Once the design was finalized, Dvorak generated the plans, sections, and views, as well as specifications and explanations. These were communicated to the client and contractors by fax and e-mail. Pre-construction and post-construction, Dvorak used the model to resolve issues and communicate design details. Questions from the construction workers were answered by using the 3D model to generate requested views, complete with notes and dimensions, and faxing them to the job site. A comprehensive design brochure, also generated from the model, contained the most up-to-date information. The combination of 3D model, 2D drawings, and brochure proved to be an efficient way to communicate the architectural design details to everyone on site. “Compared with traditional 2D drawings, the comprehensive use of a 3D model ensured continuity, total coordination and integration, and targeted communication,” Dvorak said. “Quite often, we encountered genuine astonishment from the construction workers when we presented them with our design drawings, which helped us build the home exactly the way we wanted it.” Built at a cost of 5.8 mil Czech koruna (about $270,000), the Vrnata House was completed in March 2006, except for a few landscaping details to be finished by the summer of 2007. When the family finally relocated to their new house in April of 2006, this distinctive home must have felt very familiar—having lived in the mind’s eye for so long through the architect’s vision. BE Award Winner Concrete Results BIM brings efficiencies to tilt-up construction process W hen Wells Fargo Home Mortgage decided to centralize its East Coast operations at one complex in Frederick, Maryland, it set a daunting goal—finish the project in 19 months. The $38-million project encompassed three separate buildings, with the three main three-story buildings positioned at 30-degree angles to each other and joined by circular connectors. In all, the complex contains more than 310,000 square feet of Class A office space. LJB, a multidisciplinary design-build firm based in Dayton, Ohio, determined that tilt-up construction was the only method that could meet this tight timetable and stay within the project budget. With this type of construction, steel-reinforced concrete wall panels are cast at the building site, then tilted into place using a crane and fastened to the steel structure. According to the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, more than 15 percent of all industrial buildings built today in the United States use tilt-up construction. The Wells Fargo project debunks the belief that tilt-up construction is strictly for warehouses and other industrial buildings. The façade design includes numerous fenestrations, recesses in the wall panels, and an attractive earth-tone color scheme. According to the Tilt-Up Concrete Association, the Wells Fargo project is one of the largest multistory tilt-up office structures ever built. v The focal point of the interior space is the combined living, dining, and kitchen area on the west end PROJECT OVERVIEW When Dvorak founded his own firm in January 2004, MicroStation became its sole CAD software, giving the team tight control over its designs, yet enough flexibility to respond to client requirements—no matter how large or small the project. The exacting detail of the drawings and renderings made it easy for the client and construction workers to interpret the architect’s intent.
