Ltd. BE Awards Category Civil Road Infrastructure Project Objective Widen India’s NH-9 from Hyderabad to Machilipatnam, including evaluation of multiple bypass options for eight sections of roadway I NH-9 runs mainly across a plain, with rolling terrain in some stretches. It passes through four major towns and many small villages, and the route includes 21 bridges, 197 culverts, and one railway crossing. The project was designed as a partially access-controlled facility, which Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick India took into account when planning the service roads, road safety, and the types of intersections, flyovers, and underpasses that will be required. The firm examined the technical, economic, and financial viability of upgrading the two sections of NH9 to a four- or six-lane divided highway. The existing road is in good condition, so the design called for building a new two-lane highway on one side of the existing road, with a median separating the two. This approach would fully utilize the right-of-way already acquired and greatly reduce the time spent securing additional private land. Unfortunately, the existing right-of-way proved to be minimal, so a large amount of private land had to be acquired. Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick India identified the additional land needed, along with coordinate data, and the details were staked out on the ground. They were then verified and transferred back onto revenue maps used to contact landowners. The project report provided designs for the highway, pavement, and overlay, with options for flexible or v Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick India’s plan and profile of a section of the project rigid pavement, bridges, cross-drainage structures, road where the new alignment deviates from the existing two-lane road as well as the profile is improved to provide a vehicular underpass at one of grade-separated structures, and service roads. Scott the state road intersections with the project road Wilson Kirkpatrick India also calculated quantities for various items and generated detailed working drawings and cost estimates. Other report items included analyses of Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick India Pvt. Ltd. was contracted by NHAI to economic viability, environmental and social feasibility (with prepare a feasibility study and detailed project report for the NH-9 action plans as appropriate), and documents needed for the bidexpansion. The project was split into two segments: the stretch ding process. from Hyderabad to Vijayawada and the stretch between Vijayawada Cost estimates included financial returns through tolls and other and Machilipatnam. Highway construction is scheduled to start in revenues, which NHAI requires to help attract private businesses October 2007 and finish by March 2010. Total length of the road is to build and operate its new roads. Scott Wilson Kirkpatrick India about 121 kilometers and total project cost is estimated at $190 million. PLAN AND PROFILE 4/6 LANING OF HYDERABAD - VIJAYAWADA (KM 160.0 TO 216.0) VIJAYAWADA - MACHALIPATNAM (KM 0.0 TO 64.0) OF NH-9 NH9/RH/AP/PP-31 ndia’s NH-9 highway runs from Hyderabad, the capital city of the state of Andhra Pradesh, to Machilipatnam, a port on the Bay of Bengal. As part of its National Highways Development Project, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to expand the road from two to four/six lanes and examine alternate alignments at certain towns to alleviate congestion. The highway development project is an ambitious, four-phase program to upgrade about 25,000 kilometers of key national highways using a build-operate transfer model. Under this model, the government carries out preliminary work such as land acquisition and utility removal, then turns the construction and operation over to a private concessionaire.
