BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 4) QUICK TAKES Who Is Using BIM and Why? with 7,600 at the ITE College East campus— initiated the program by providing MicroStation software and awarding the students a stipend for their excellence. Where the commercial or safety impact of failure is high, it is clearly vital to find the right combination of risk, performance, and cost. >>more highlights As of 2006, 16 percent of AIA memberowned architecture firms have acquired building information modeling (BIM) software, and 64 percent of these firms are using BIM for billable work, according to the 2006 AIA Firm Survey. This accounts for a small but growing share of the profession. Firms using BIM indicate that it is primarily being used for design development (91 percent), schematic design (86 percent), and construction documentation (81 percent) phases. What are the characteristics of firms that have acquired BIM software, and how do they differ from firms that have not yet begun use of the software? >>more >>more Accelerating Interoperability Student Projects Reflect Budding Talent The academic portion of the 2007 BE Awards of Excellence program recognized Accelerated Deployment of ISO 15926 is a collaborative effort led by FIATECH to establish a universal platform for improving the interoperability in the lifecycle of capital projects and facilities. FIATECH has assembled a team of about 35 organizations, including Fluor, Bechtel, and Primavera to contribute to the project. >>more The New Wembley Stadium Wembley architect and MicroStation user Lord Foster recently gave BBC Match of the Day’s Adrian Chiles a tour of the magnificent new stadium in the United Kingdom. Lord Foster opened the guided tour with “This is the very first of its kind. There is nothing like this in the world.” Commenting on the arch over the new stadium, Foster added, “The arch was one of those inspirational things and became embodied in sketches. And it really works.” He explained that the arch is holding all of the roof on one side and 60 percent of it on the other. “It is the symbol of the new Wembley,” he continued. “It hadn’t been done before so it was a challenge, but everyone was committed to the challenge.” >>video Bridging Gap Between Industry and Academia Thanks to a new partnership, the Institute of Technical Engineering (ITE) College East in Singapore now has 40 new computers loaded with Bentley software, each with 50 add-on modules that give students access to all CAD applications required by the AEC industry so they can improve on the skills taught in class. In a recent joint partnership, aceplp.com Pte Ltd conveyed the engineering technology to ITE College East, whose modern campus has set the example with two other campuses under development. ITE—a school that had 24,600 enrolled students in 2006, the innovative and technically advanced projects created by students from middle schools and universities around the world. As with the professional awards, the academic winners were selected by a panel of jurors made up of professional engineers and university professors. Each winning student or team received a $1,000 scholarship and their schools received a free computer and Bentley software. >>video Asset Management for Asian Water Utilities The concept of asset management is widely used in many sectors. For instance, financial services institutions have long used the term to mean getting the best return from their investments. The water industry also turns to asset management to improve its performance-for-cost. The United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand are pioneering such a holistic approach. In developing countries, industrial, political, and globalization imperatives have forced a radical re-think on how to get better cost performance. Don’t Miss a Minute!
