BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 48) GEOSPATIAL best. There were hundreds of different configurations of sources, pipe sizes, and infrastructure arrangements that might be used with varying degrees of success. The advanced features of WaterCAD allowed M&S Engineering to easily create an overall model with each of the nine units incorporated into it. Then, it was simply a matter of turning “on” or “off” the different sections that they needed. The same was true in determining which of several options for placement of infrastructure was the most desirable. The scenario manager allowed multiple orientations of pumps, tanks, and other elements to be easily set up and transitioned through. Regarding data input, Konstanski was astounded by how easy it was to input a vast amount of information and quickly generate meaningful results. He said, “Along with answering the infrastructure questions, WaterCAD allowed us to quickly analyze the efficiency of the system.” He added that laying out pressure zones was greatly simplified, since topographic survey data could be incorporated into the model. Here again, he noted, the wellthought-out commands of WaterCAD greatly assisted the task. Konstanski concluded: “In a world where you are only as good as your last job, WaterCAD has made us far more effective in the ultimate bottom line: serving our client. When we created water models before, we brought our client a solution—with WaterCAD, we are able to bring our client the best solution. The ease with which we are now able to create different scenarios, run extended period simulations, and relocate infrastructure allows us to be confident that the final design truly is the best system our client can get at the lowest possible cost.” G E O S PAT I A L N E W S FROM BENTLEY Manila Water Chooses Bentley’s WaterGEMs V8 XM Edition >>more AAMHatch Wins 2007 BE Award >>more v Not one but nine separate water systems had to be designed, each taking into account sources and demand Ville de Saguenay, Quebec, Canada, Joins Bentley’s Municipal License Subscription Program >>more Konstanski explained that the ability to isolate different parts of the model and create different scenarios eliminated the need for a different model to simulate each possible arrangement. “This saved us literally hundreds of hours throughout the project,” he said, “thus saving both M&S Engineering and our client, Bluegreen, thousands—if not tens of thousands—of dollars.” Keith Strimple, M&S Engineering’s vice president, added, “From a project management perspective, WaterCAD is a must. It allowed our designers to modify the water model nearly on the fly as the developer continued to make major changes to the existing and future units, with little or no effort, and consequently little or no expense.” Konstanski also was impressed by the software’s ease of use: “No other program that we have encountered is so user friendly. Throughout this project, we found ourselves continually marveling at how well the software developers had thought through the arrangement of the menus and windows.” He compared this to the firm’s previous water modeling software, which was anything but easy to navigate. Konstanski explained that many minutes here and there were lost clicking through a cumbersome set of commands in order to view something as simple as a graph. With WaterCAD, by comparison, the time saved was not in huge chunks, but it made M&S Engineering a lot more efficient in the moment–to-moment work, which adds up.
