BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 3 - (Page 58) PLANT Virtual environment Efficiency was increased as a result of the design team’s ability to work in a concurrent engineering 3D environment. Project-specific information was accessible to multiple departments and disciplines without reliance on the transfer of traditional hard copies. Interdiscipline project reviews could be undertaken in a virtual environment without having to make use of discipline-specific prints. Compiling and checking of specifications was enabled electronically at a database level, thereby raising the level of conformity and allowing the design team to focus on the task at hand rather than having to manually interface with catalog-based data representing the shapes and sizes of individual components. Use of digital information is beneficial in other ways as well. Migration of an existing database to a new project with 80 to 90 percent information reuse will shorten the lead-time for future projects of a similar nature. For example, detail checking of design can be done for design integrity rather than graphical clarity, since the software-driven specification engine has taken care of the drafting aspect. This results in fewer chances for mistakes and greatly enhances the certainty of the information’s precision. The supply of legacy data to project subcontractors is now enhanced, provided that adequate channels of communication are established and appropriate use of the electronic file format is exercised. This avoids unnecessary rework on behalf of the vendor, which is open to misinterpretation of the original concept or function required to meet the needs of the design. There is now a proven value in having a site-based visualization facility, particularly in the establishment phase of the project. The use of a trusted program that delivers consistently accurate data has helped the design team deliver a product that is built correctly and without error. “There is an established confidence and assurance that if the engineering phase is carried out within our v Efficiency increased as a result of the design team’s ability to work in a concurrent 3D environment proven environment, the balance of the project delivers predictable results,” said Young. “The automated production of bills of material has the consequence of forecast budgets becoming more accurate than in the past. The reduced incidence of site-based costs is another financial plus.” DRA Mineral Projects has a self-imposed requirement that all its projects be finished ahead of schedule and below budget, without compromising quality. Aside from trimming five weeks from the original schedule, AutoPLANT has enabled the design team to save an estimated three design office hours per isometric line generated from the database-driven model. Based on these figures alone, Young estimated DRA Mineral Projects investment in AutoPLANT software has paid for itself and will continue to benefit future projects. “Having access to the adequate tools for the task is part of any team’s success,” said Young. “In the modern engineering environment, the correct software coupled with a competent support system are vital aspects to meeting the challenges that the next project will offer.” PLANT NEWS FROM BENTLEY A DVERTISERS I NDEX MicroStation V8 XM Wins Cadalyst All-Star Award >>more Bentley Announces the ProjectWise Passport >>more The American Red Cross . . . . . . . . . . . . . .15 GESS . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .23 HP Large Format Printers . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .5 HP Workstations . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Cover 2 ModernTech . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Cover 3 Norconsult . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .11 Thank You Sponsors . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .29 Transoft Solutions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .Cover 4 Vidar . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .9 Architecture, Engineering, and Construction CIOs Focus on Strategies To Improve Economic Productivity >>more VECO Joins Bentley’s Enterprise License Subscription Program >>more BE Conference 2007 and BE Conference Europe Focus on Learning and Innovation >>more Bentley Advances Plant Interoperations and Innovation Sharing at daratechPlant 2007 >>more North China Power Engineering Wins 2007 BE Award >>more Bentley Unveils ProjectWise Navigator >>more 58 BE MAGAZINE | Volume 4, Issue 3 http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+3/MicroStation+V8+XM.htm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+2/ProjectWise+Passport.htm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+1/VECO.htm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+2/AEC+CIOs.htm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+1/daratechPLANT2007.htm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+2/BE+Conference+2007+and+Europe.htm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+1/Projectwise+Navigator.htm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Corporate/News/Quarter+2/North+China.htm
