What are the primary reasons you have made learning an ongoing process? From a personal standpoint, I have been fortunate to have been afforded the opportunity to advance my skill set continually, particularly in the last five years. The management at Camp Dresser & McKee (CDM) also has been very supportive and realizes the benefits that this training offers. Since my career began back in Ireland, I have always been self-motivated and curious about technology and how it relates to my structural engineering background. It was from here that my interest in 3D technology began and has continued ever since. From a professional standpoint, the ongoing learning process has resulted in several positive and progressively challenging career opportunities in recent years. One of the more rewarding and tangible benefits resulting from these opportunities has been the chance to help others in their professional development both in formal training and one-on-one mentoring. In recent years, have you seen any attitude changes about the importance of training? v CDM has embraced live instructor-led distance learning and provides this type of training on a regular basis (CDM Vice President William C. Kearney (right) initiatives, Bentley Institute has been a leader in exploiting this technology and as a result has allowed me to quickly gain the more advanced skills I need without unnecessary travel or production downtime. What criteria do you use to determine if a course you have taken would be beneficial for others at your organization? During your career, you have learned and implemented many new changes in hardware and software technology. In your opinion, what were some of the most exciting advances? Definitely. Technology has increased exponentially over the past decade, creating a real need for more advanced skill sets. This was a challenge for many companies, including CDM, and continues to be today. However, with the advent of technologies such as distance learning and the use of virtual classrooms, training and professional development have never been easier and more accessible. Through its Star Program (www.bentley.com/starprogram) and other At CDM, we are continually looking for ways to be more efficient and reduce wasted effort and resources. Obviously training is a key ingredient for us. If I have previously taken a course, I will try to determine the audience needing this type of training and decide if Bentley formal training is needed or if I can use the “trickle down” method and provide some training in-house in a more condensed fashion. It is simply a matter of providing the optimal solution to our staff. In the 3D/4D arena, the emergence of very sophisticated solutions in the past 10 to 15 years has been amazing. I was one of the early users of the first generations of 3D plant software and have watched the software mature and develop. It seems that every 18 to 24 months we are faced with new technology. This normally requires me to evaluate my skill sets and retrain myself if necessary to stay current. CDM is very supportive of continuous training and professional development.
