BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 12) © Grimshaw GenerativeComponents Combining creativity and intuition with logic David Chadwick CAD User O n hearing that designs created using Bentley’s GenerativeComponents benefit from both intuition and logic, I couldn’t help wondering whether such a combination is not inherently a contradiction in terms. Intuition is typically used to describe the state of being aware of or knowing something without having to discover or perceive it. There are no rules. Whereas logic is often used to describe the relationship between certain events, situations, or objects, and the inevitable consequences of their interaction. It’s all about rules. So intrigued and skeptical, I dug a little deeper to understand how this new parametric system could combine these seemingly contradictory terms—and what the appeal from a designer’s perspective might be. Designers have, since the dawn of time, sought to innovate. Indeed, innovation is widely regarded as a trophy that awaits creative professionals who successfully explore endless design alternatives to ultimately arrive at the most efficient solution—a process that can be incredibly time consuming as each alternative is thoroughly modeled and assessed. Using existing tools, a minor change to a design may require a major update to the model, thus restricting the number of design alternatives considered by the team due to time constraints. The result? Design innovation is left beyond the reach of many who don’t have the time to explore endless design alternatives. GenerativeComponents is the first parametric design system to apply the power of symbolic math—through graphical and scripting tools—to generate complex geometry with component relationships.
