BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 15) THE LAGOONS What was once 1,200 acres of sand will become a spectacular new community combining waterways, harbors, lush landscapes, and dramatic skyscrapers. As envisioned by Thompson Ventulett, Stainback & Associates, the project is composed of seven islands, thematically representing the seven Emirates of the UAE. All buildings in the business district were modeled in MicroStation and then handed off to an outside entity for final visualization. These modeling efforts were vital in the design process to identify form, scale, and proportion relationships of each individual building and its relationship to the site as a whole. Being able to modify such a complex design easily in GenerativeComponents and see the repercussions of these modifications throughout major building systems was critical in moving such a complex project forward through the design process. —BE Magazine SETUN HILLS BUSINESS PARK, MOSCOW Setun Hills Business Park Moscow is an award-winning business park designed by Bothe Richter Teherani in the western part of the city. In order to integrate more than 550,000 square meters of the innovative and massive office complex into a greenfield environment, multiple relationships between interior and exterior spaces had to be considered and evaluated using special forms and interlocking concepts. GenerativeComponents was crucial to study and properly understand the complex relationships between the buildings and the natural environment. Bentley’s BIM solutions enabled the firm to complete the detailed design evaluation during the feasibility phase —BE Magazine in only a few weeks. for digital fabrication—creating an unfolded model that is completely associative to the design model, so that once again, any changes to the master will be automatically reflected. And because GenerativeComponents is an innovation by MicroStation, parametric and ordinary solids, surface, and mesh models can all be combined to use the most appropriate resources for each element of the building, linking them into a single, connected model. GenerativeComponents is helping creative architects and engineers to iterate more rapidly on their journey to find the most innovative, most efficient designs possible. It’s not like SketchUp, where your seven-year old could pick it up and model a dog kennel in an afternoon—it does require some training. But, then, it offers an entirely new way of working with complex geometry, so training seems like the right place to start. And the resulting projects that I have seen—the Bishopsgate Tower by KPF and the Dostyk Towers by NBBJ and E/Ye Design—demonstrate tremendous creativity based on a highly developed sense of intuitive design, expressed with a clarity that comes from an equally developed sense of design logic. Perhaps the combination of intuition and logic is not so alien after all.
