BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 2) QUICK TAKES The Drive To Innovate his issue of BE Magazine focuses on how new technologies are not only enabling improved efficiency and increased productivity, but also facilitating innovation. In “Converging on the Market: CAD, Geospatial, 3D, Visualization, and BIM” (page 6), Sam Bacharach of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) explains how a diverse set of technologies, including spatial technologies, are merging as they transition toward interoperability. Through the results of an OGC interoperability test bed, Bacharach demonstrates that building information modeling (BIM) and policies that promote data sharing and BIM standards are key components in solving a productivity challenge that costs the construction industry tens of billions of dollars each year in the United States alone. Says Bacharach, “BIM relies on interoperability among a range of information technologies to enable efficiencies: fewer delays, mistakes, and misunderstandings; fewer meetings and phone calls; and fewer physicial deliveries of information media.” In his article “Bytes and Bricks” on page 10, Jim Sinopoli of Sinopoli and Associates emphasizes the importance of gathering data and information created during the design and construction of a building so it can later be used during facility operation and management. Sinopoli offers suggestions on ways to facilitate the sharing of design and construction data when BIM is not being used, but sees BIM as the ultimate solution. “BIM has the potential to be the vehicle or depository for use by the design team, contractors, and the owner, with each party having the capability to add their own data and information to the model,” says Sinopoli. BIM, of course, isn’t the only new technology having an important impact on design efficiencies and innovation. In the article that begins on page 12, CAD User ’s David Chadwick explains how Bentley’s GenerativeComponents provides users with rapid iteration of design alternatives to accelerate their search for design innovation. GenerativeComponents is the first parametric design system to apply the power of symbolic math—through graphical and scripting tools—to generate complex geometry with component relationships. This new tool gives architects the ability to intuitively explore complex shapes and structures without constraint. And yet, at the same time, says Chadwick, it delivers tools that enable the same users to create and maintain the precise algorithmic relationships between each of the components in the structure that provide for rapid and logical iteration. For a behind-the-scenes look at how GenerativeComponents became an unprecedented experience of open and iterative development for both Bentley and a forwardthinking community of elite practitioners, see Greg Bentley’s “The Last Word” (page 48). As always, BE Magazine also provides a diversified selection of inspiring projects designed and built by users around the globe—ranging from an opera house renovation in Australia and a greenfield airport in India to a fiber-optic network in the Netherlands and a flue gas desulfurization project in the United States.
