BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 28) CIVIL to sanitary sewer layout. With site objects constructed in Bentley PowerCivil, designers were able to view models of the existing site surface and visualize alternative surfaces. When the graded site was turned over to the drainage and utility designers, they were able to identify, evaluate, and resolve conflicts almost immediately. The normal process of hand calculation and manual manipulation was essentially eliminated. After the underground utilities were designed, Bentley PowerCivil automatically labeled the plan and profile sheets—saving at least 80 man-hours in this step alone. Overall, the efficiencies gained using Bentley software saved InSite Engineering approximate 800 man-hours. “We estimate that our productivity was increased by more than 30 percent, due in large part to our ability to make instant updates available for evaluation by the design team.” said InSite Engineering project manager Shannon King. “This eliminated the long lead time normally required to evaluate significant changes, and resulted in a compressed design schedule and quicker project delivery.” InSite Engineering estimates that the rapid design delivery saved the project owner up to $150,000, because it was able to move the project quickly into construction once it received the city of Alabaster’s approval. The site infrastructure is due to be completed in April 2008. When Blackhawk Estates of Alabaster is fully built out, incorporating the natural habitat and eye-catching traffic circle design, the subdivision will be poised to become a highly livable community in this rapidly growing southern city. Applying innovation in this complex environment is no small task, but four years into a 17-year project, the firms have exhibited the engineering leadership required to successfully accomplish this, increasing productivity and saving dollars in the process. In Kentuckiana—the Louisville metropolitan area where the Ohio River defines the border between southern Indiana and northern Kentucky—civil professionals are hard at work meeting the region’s future cross-river transportation needs. The Louisville Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges project, authorized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2003, has three components, each a major project in itself: s New downtown Louisville bridge will be built east of the Kennedy Bridge (I-65) Kennedy Interchange Reconstruction Organization Kentucky Transportation Associates BE Awards Category Civil Distributed Enterprise BE Award Finalist s New east-end bridge about eight miles from downtown will connect the Gene Snyder Freeway (KY 841) to the Lee Hamilton Highway (IN 265) s Rebuild of the existing Kennedy Inter- change where I-64, I-65, and I-71 converge in downtown Louisville This megaproject began construction in 2007 and is scheduled for completion in 2020. The total project cost is an estimated $3.9 billion, with Kentucky bearing 71 percent of the cost—making it the largest capital project in the state’s history.
