BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 29) CIVIL Transportation Cabinet and the Indiana Department of Transportation, is working with the FHWA, a general engineering consultant, and six section design prime consultants to expedite design and construction. Coordination and communication among all parties was a paramount concern. Team members needed a systematic way to work together using the same design standards so Kentucky Transportation Cabinet specified that all the contractors use InRoads for engineering design and ProjectWise for managing and sharing engineering documents. ProjectWise centralizes project data, enforces design standards, and reduces time spent finding and managing files. To date, 250 to 300 professionals are sharing more than 25,000 files in nearly 4,000 folders—or about 75 gigabytes of data—across disparate networks. The general engineering consultant— Community Transportation Solutions, a consortium of Parsons Transportation Group of Chicago; HMB Professional Engineers of Frankfort; and Beam, Longest and Neff Engineers of Indianapolis—conservatively estimates that the collaboration system could save about $9 million over the life of the project. With design 40 percent complete on Kentucky’s side and 10 percent complete on Indiana’s, productivity gains are already apparent. Two of the six section design primes—Kentucky Transportation Associates (KTA), a consortium of four engineering firms supported by about 20 subconsultants, and Michael Baker Jr. (Baker) supported by 11 subconsultants—have achieved remarkable results. Untangling “Spaghetti Junction” new bridges, and more than three miles of retaining walls—all designed to blend in with the surrounding communities, which includes a business district, historic and residential areas, and parks. Before teaming together for this project, the four KTA partners—QK4, Palmer Engineering, WMB, and American Consulting Engineers—had worked together but never truly collaborated on a design. Typically, projects were divided into design sections, with each firm being responsible for an individual section. For the Kennedy Interchange project, which is on a tight schedule, the partners recognized that it would be more efficient to design in a layered format across the entire project. This approach allows KTA to assign work based on core competencies and enables multiple people across the four firms to work simultaneously on any task. Centralized management of more than 20,000 files enables continuous communication and collaboration among the partner functional area enforce the use of design standards. Standardized workflows with automated quality controls allow designers to work on files, then advance them to the next level for review. Permissions levels are set to prohibit changes after documents are approved. “The ability to coordinate this many groups and individuals and manage the various aspects of the project was a rewarding accomplishment made possible in large part by the implementation of ProjectWise,” said Glenn Kelly, KTA project manager. “A project of this magnitude and complexity would have been impossible to manage efficiently without it.” PROJECT OVERVIEW Ohio River Bridges Project Organization Michael Baker Jr. BE Awards Category Civil Road Infrastructure The Kennedy Interchange reconstruction is the largest of the six sections of the Ohio River Bridges project. It will provide the connecting roadways to the new and existing bridges, as well as improve safety and alleviate congestion. The existing interchange merges I-64 through-traffic with downtown-oriented I-65 and I-71 traffic, creating numerous left-hand entrances and exits, difficult weaves, and conflict points where accidents occur. The new geometry will incorporate 28 baseline miles, with some 82 miles of paved travel lanes, 88 firms as well as with the bi-state management team, the general engineering consultant, and the subcontractors. Team members have real-time access to up-to-date project information and design data, ensuring that all parties work with current information.
