BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 3) QUICK TAKES NEWS Haestad Solutions Selected No. 1 Modeling Software The Haestad Methods product line has been selected as the No. 1 water resources modeling software in a national survey conducted across the readership of CE News’ Civil Connection, a leading civil engineering newsletter published by ZweigWhite. The survey asked licensed civil engineering professionals employed by leading consulting, engineering, survey, and construction firms and key public works departments, utilities, and Extending Utilization of 3D Data Aberdeen Group’s new benchmark report “Beyond Engineering, New Applications of 3D Drive Top Line Growth” finds that bestin-class organizations are twice as likely to leverage 3D design data in downstream departments. As a result, Aberdeen found that these companies are twice as likely to achieve their product-quality goals and are one-third more likely to launch their products on time and capture greater market share. Best-in-class organizations were more likely to create 3D design data-based deliverables within manufacturing (100 percent vs. 63 percent), documentation (75 percent vs. 50 percent), training (50 percent vs. 17 percent), and marketing and sales (88 percent vs. 54 percent) organizations. Consequently, they were twice as likely to achieve their product-quality goals and maintain high customer satisfaction. Chad Jackson, research and service director for product innovation and engineering at Aberdeen, observed, “Use of 3D design data by nonengineering organizations may well harken the true arrival of concurrent product development. Best-in-class performers are using 3D design data to enable the manufacturing, documentation, training, and sales organizations to start authoring their deliverables prior to design release.” The report offers recommendations for companies seeking the highest return on their use of 3D simulation data: s Broaden the access of 3D design data to other nonengineering organizations through product data management solutions s Leverage 3D design data in nonengineer deliverables by embedding them in documents, embedding text into 3D design data as a new nonengineering deliverable, and authoring HTML/XML deliverables with 3D design data. Students Tackle Infrastructure Safety Earlier this fall, thousands of middle-school students began tackling the issue of safety for the vast network of utilities, transportation, structures, and communications systems in the 2008 National Engineers Week Future City Competition. Sponsored by the nation’s professional engineering community, Future City strives to stir interest in science, technology, math, and engineering among young people. Starting with each new school year, the competition asks students to work in teams under the guidance of a teacher and a volunteer engineer mentor to design and build a city of tomorrow. They must also conduct research for an essay on a pressing social need. Future City Competitions will be held in January 2008 in 40 regions across the country. First-place winners from each qualifying regional competition receive an all-expense-paid trip to the 16th annual Bentley-sponsored Future City National Finals in Washington, D.C., Feb. 18-20, 2008, during Engineers Week. National grand prize is a trip to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. More than 30,000 students from 1,100 middle schools are expected to participate nationwide. >>more municipalities about their software preferences in seven categories of water resources modeling software. Bentley’s Haestad solutions earned the No. 1 position, receiving up to more than three times the top responses of the closest competing products in five categories. The survey respondents said that ease of use is their foremost requirement for water resources modeling software, and that they found Bentley’s Haestad products to be the easiest to use. Said Charley Ferrucci, vice president, Bentley water asset solutions, “Hydraulic modeling is complex by nature and can consume a great deal of an engineer’s time. Our investment in usability improves productivity in all three critical stages of the modeling process. This means our users can spend more time doing what they know best: engineering.” >>more >>more Volume 4, Issue 4 | BE MAGAZINE 3 http://www.futurecity.org/home_press.shtm http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Promo/HM+Solutions/Celebrating+Haestad+No+1/ http://www.aberdeen.com/press/releases/press_release.asp?rid=159
