The Netherlands already has the highest broadband penetration in the European Union—broadband cable is available to 90 percent of the population. As more dark fiber goes light in Zuid Limburg, this southern region will continue to set the pace for bringing broadband to government, business, and education. owners and their customers have access to reliable connections day and night,” Beenakkers said. “Bentley enhances our professional reputation and ability to ensure future commissioned work.” Three-layered design Building out the Isilinx network required close coordination among all project participants. The open network model consists of three layers, with each layer being owned and operated by a different party. The Isidoor corporation is responsible for the service layer, which provides the Internet, telephone, and television services. Stichting Isilinx, a technology infrastructure company, owns and manages the active layer, which includes the equipment for provisioning and maintaining the network, and the physical layer, which includes the fibers, cables, and connectors. Though Isidoor and Isilinx are affiliated, Nacap Telecom was responsible for designing the dark-fiber network for Isilinx. Bentley offered a comprehensive solution for drawing, documenting, and maintaining the fiber network. It enabled Nacap Telecom to connect the different types of layers within the network, and to connect BE Award Winner Revolutionizing Integrity Management Utility’s enterprisewide CAD/GIS applications saves estimated $4 million per year B v Maastricht section of the fiber network displayed on Google Earth™ with green lines representing bundles of conduits the specific data about each layer on a detailed level. The process was so efficient, Nacap Telecom was able to design a larger network than planned in less time. A collaborative working environment guaranteed a fully coordinated and integrated design. “Since there are more parties involved now than when constructing the network initially, it has been a challenge to cooperate and communicate successfully with all stakeholders,” said Hans van Waas, Nacap Telecom’s project manager for the Isilinx network. “We not only had to fine tune communications interfaces between the three layers, but also communicate with subcontractors and other third parties that needed to contribute and agree on construction procedures.” ProjectWise provided a secure, central hub for data and communication among disciplines and stakeholders. Nacap Telecom estimated that using Bentley solutions saved at least one man-year during design and construction, for a cost savings of 85,000 euro. altimore Gas & Electric Company (BGE) invested $37 million and five years in developing an enterprise-class geospatial data repository and associated applications. The system supports a wide range of corporate business processes and Bentley products play a significant role in the benefits achieved. For the Bentley portion of this effort, BGE has realized a return on investment of 14 percent, with a payback period of 151 days across a managed environment of more than 400 Bentley users. BGE serves more than 1 million business and residential electric customers and 600,000 gas customers in central Maryland, an area that encompasses the city of Baltimore and all or part of 10 counties.
