At any one time the firm may be handling from 50 to several hundred contracts, facilities, and projects. Each customer has its own set of systems and CAD standards to handle plant data, and a single customer contract may encompass multiple projects underway simultaneously. With the lifespan of a contract running from two to 15 years, the management of multiple contracts, projects, data formats, and applications proved formidable. Aker Kvaerner traditionally used multiple applications to handle the different types of project data, but many of these systems offered no way to control files. all systems used on the same project. The environment would also ensure use of the correct CAD configurations for each project. “The challenges of integrating and managing live engineering data in the very complex environment of MMO services are significant—involving multiple systems with large volumes of everchanging information across multiple facilities, projects, contracts, and clients,” said Dave Turner, manager of global engineering systems, global application management at Aker Kvaerner. Document integration v Aker Kvaerner designed a controlled, integrated engineering data environment for its MMO contracts In 2000, Aker Kvaerner set out to design a controlled, integrated engineering data environment for its MMO contracts. The top priority was to establish an information workflow through all the different systems and applications so information would be accessed from a single source, not copied between systems. The environment would support all files, drawings, and documents created and edited in each project, ensuring that changes are communicated to Aker Kvaerner selected the ProjectWise collaboration system to handle the document management for this complex engineering data integration environment. A template database created in ProjectWise is used as the contract database, and all integration between different systems is then accomplished through ProjectWise using a template transfer model. The ProjectWise implementation also includes standard document environments with a structure that conforms to NORSOK specifications. Each environment provides appropriate discipline access and access controls, and workflow conforms to Aker Kvaerner’s project execution model. Aker Kvaerner picked ProjectWise in part because of its ability to handle CAD configurations. Being able to set a specific CAD configuration for different folders in each contract database enables the company to meet the requirements of its customers. Another plus is the ability of ProjectWise to handle hybrid files, in particular those based on DGN and CIT. This makes it possible to integrate the database information in ProjectWise with other engineering system databases. Aker Kvaerner finds that maintaining strict user access permissions greatly increases the quality of the data. The access groups also permit customer access to all documents that are in a specific state, which saves the engineering department considerable time because it no longer needs to send information to customers. The document management system also has a routine for automatically registering documents in the Engineering Register and ProjectWise from within the PDMS 3D plant design application. The latest addition to the workflow is a nightly transfer of data from the Engineering Register and ProjectWise through Web services to customer systems. All documentation in a specified state is Volume 4, Issue 4 | BE MAGAZINE 39
