BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 42) PLANT facilities under design generated a huge volume of information, comprising about 30,000 documents and exceeding 32 gigabytes. new routes run over or adjacent to existing and operating ones. For the coal derivatives department modernization, BSPiR EPK designed about 4,000 meters of piping routes for a total of 32,000 meters of pipeline. The weight of the steel structure for the coke oven battery alone amounts to 3,000 tons. Modeling methods The Przyja´ ´ coke plant is the first project in which BSPiR EPK zn used Bentley’s PlantSpace solutions. Currently, 90 percent of the pipeline designs prepared by the BSPiR EPK mechanical engineering department are created in PlantSpace. BSPiR EPK engineers find the application easy to use, and it provides features that help detect and prevent mistakes. Students did much of the design work on the installation for desorption of acidic constituents and ammonia, and the team leader and an experienced senior assistant easily verified their work in PlantSpace. Another advantage of creating 3D models with PlantSpace is better coordination with the other engineering firm working on v The ability to avoid collisions ensures that the new structure and process installations don’t interfere with existing pipelines BSPiR EPK expects its experience with the Przyja´ n coke plant z´ will open up new markets for its design services, especially in the area of transferring toxic media in coke engineering. “Until now, we were avoiding involvement in the design of large quantities of complex pipelines, or ‘spaghetti’ as our engineers call them,” said Siuciak. “But now, commissions to handle these complex systems are very much welcome.” PLANT NEWS FROM BENTLEY v BSPiR EPK worked on a $280 million project to increase coke plant capacity by 1.4 million tons per year Bentley’s Anne-Marie Walters Named Chairperson of ECC for 2007–2008 >>more the project, which also used AutoPLANT, so both were able to exchange models of pipelines and civil structures using DGN files. This allowed engineers to precisely specify the terminal points at the design scope boundaries to avoid collisions, and the improved design accuracy in turn reduced costs for fabrication and rework. The ability to avoid collisions is particularly important on projects such as the Przyja´ ´ coke plant, in which zn the new structure and process installations can’t interfere with existing pipelines. BSPiR EPK also used the ProjectWise collaboration system to synchronize, share, and secure project documents. Mieczyslaw Siuciak, manager of the BSPiR EPK mechanical engineering department, explained, “The managed environment was implemented on this project. Because we are a multidisciplinary design firm using ProjectWise, our exchange of information is now more confidently shared, synchronized, and secured.
