BE Magazine - Volume 4, Issue 4 - (Page 46) BE CAREERS A Winning Legacy High school stays true to its renowned engineering roots E astern Technical High School in Baltimore County, Maryland, receives between 900 and 1,000 applications each year vying for approximately 325 spots per class on the county level. Students enter the school at the ninthgrade level only and choose between 10 different career majors, one of which is its award-winning engineering curriculum. Eastern Tech’s rigorous engineering program started a decade ago. It is a transformation of the original electronics program, which started at the school’s inception in 1972. With an educational model that has always been comprehensive, Eastern Tech currently offers college prep as well as technical education. Traditional technical programs such as construction management at the school have evolved over the years to include business components like accounting and management. Of its faculty members, Chair David Scrivener has been teaching in the program the longest. Peter Glaudemans was hired in August 1991 at a time when many vocational schools were transforming their model from a purely vocational curriculum to a technology-based one. Glaudemans has taught CAD for 16 years at the high school and community-college level. During that time, numerous students under his mentorship have participated in regional, national, and international competitions. A five-time recipient of the Baltimore County Recognition Aw a r d , Glaudemans explained, “I consider myself more as a teacher of critical thinking who happens to use engineering concepts and Bentley software to encourage students to analyze and solve problems.” Glaudemans attributed the strengths of Eastern Tech’s technology and engineering programs to its “wide exposure to different disciplines, applied mathematics, and vast majority of the students are interested in doing well in their careers. If you give them opportunities, they respond well,” he added. Eastern Tech’s students have indeed responded—and excelled—due to a curriculum and faculty that prepares them for success in their fields of study and in their chosen career. For example, earlier this UPGRADING STUDENT PROFICIENCIES MicroStation PowerDraft V8 XM Edition, a professional-level application used for production 2D/3D drafting and detailing, is now available to students and schools at no expense. The latest version of MicroStation PowerDraft features a new user-friendly interface and tools for publishing designs directly to Google Earth™. “In my classes, students are exposed to a variety of Bentley software in our CAD program. Upon graduation, many are able to leverage this technology experience to obtain lucrative engineering jobs with significant salaries and benefits,” said Peter Glaudemans, an instructor at Eastern Technical High School. “Now that MicroStation PowerDraft V8 XM Edition is included with Bentley’s academic program, our students will have access to this technology both at school and home. This will allow them to become proficient with not only the software but also the engineering concepts associated with design.” >>more high standards for student performance.” Of the students graduating from the CADD program, he estimated that roughly one third go directly into the workplace upon graduation, one third enter four-year college or university programs, and the remaining third go on to community college to further define their main areas of interest. “A year a team from the school won the BE Awards of Excellence student competition at the middle school/high school level for the second year running. Another Eastern Tech team earned a finalist slot. Moreover, Eastern Tech students are capping their academic success with high-paying jobs straight out of high school. As fate would have it, upon his graduation, BE-Awardwinning team member Anthony Apostolou was hired by Baltimore Gas & Electric—a company that had also won a BE Award of Excellence in this year’s competition. The mission statement for Eastern Tech states, “We will provide a first-rate education to all students. Each student will be poised for success in college and the workplace.” No promise could prove truer, to the benefit of the approximately 1,300 students enrolled there each year. v 46 BE MAGAZINE | Volume 4, Issue 4 Eastern Tech students (left to right) Christine Lupton, Meghan Goff, and Anthony Apostolou designed the BE Award-winning “Pelican Bay Elementary School” http://www.bentley.com/en-US/Community/Academic/
