BE Magazine - Volume 5, Issue 1 - (Page 4) QUICK TAKES NEWS Students From India Develop Real-World Infrastructure As you read this, 14 student teams representing 10 schools will have participated in this year’s Future Cities India 2020 competition. Watch for the next BE Magazine, which will provide inspiring insight into this year’s winners and their innovative projects. The project presentations were judged by a panel of distinguished experts from the infrastructure community. The students were guided by teachers and industry mentors, and all of the projects were designed using advanced software provided by Bentley. The focus was again on the Commonwealth Games 2010, for which students conceptualized ideas for developing land that satisfied the neighboring residential community and all environmental issues. Instituted by the Ministry of Science & Technology in India, the competition for students is a partnership among government, universities, and the business community that encourages students to use their design skills to help prepare India’s cities for the year 2020. The program is supported by Bentley’s BE Careers Network, which is an initiative in which Bentley empowers students early in their education to learn the technological tools and helps students develop market-ready skills. >>more Outlook for eLearning As reported by Chief Learning Officer magazine, a recent study by Global Industry Analysts Inc. shows that demand for eLearning is expected to exceed $52.6 billion by 2010 worldwide. The study, titled “eLearning: A Global Strategic Business Report,” also demonstrates how eLearning solutions are being incorporated into a large variety of informational and training applications at many corporations. Project Management Survey Firms in the architecture, engineering, planning, and environmental consulting industry are always trying to figure out how to improve their project management techniques and procedures. This is not surprising. Effective project management and project managers can mean the difference between making and losing money, pleasing and displeasing clients, maintaining a good image, and reducing liability. Zweig-White’s newly updated “2007 Project Management Survey of Architecture, Engineering, Planning & Environmental Consulting Firms” includes benchmarks on what other firms are doing in terms of organizational structure, policies, and systems for project management, and benchmarking data for project manager salaries, bonuses, perks, chargeability, and billing rates. It also discusses how the competition is handling project manager training, performance reviews, requirements for becoming a project manager, and information access; the best methods to stay on schedule and within budget; how to make decisions regarding project management software and Web site use; and what other project managers in the industry have to say about their greatest challenges. >>more The eLearning model is now the No. 2 method companies use to deploy learning and development, according to the report. More products are available from various content, service, and technology providers, but interoperability continues to be a challenge. The study cites a lack of interoperable standards as potentially stunting the growth. The study also found the U.S. eLearning market is the world’s largest, as its 2007 revenues were expected to exceed $17.5 billion. Furthermore, the U.S. corporate eLearning market share is more than 60 percent. Europe’s share (less than 15 percent) is the second largest. The Japanese market is not as large, but because of globalization, Asia is predicted to experience a faster uptake. The study notes that its compound annual growth rate likely will range between 25 percent and 30 percent through 2010.
