BE Magazine Volume 5, Issue 2 - (Page 5) QUICK TAKES Applying Vision to Technology In 2007, Bentley formed the Applied Research Group within its software development group. Led by Senior Vice President Buddy Cleveland, the group’s mission is to look beyond the next version of software to identify opportunities where new technologies can be applied in support of the vitally important mission Bentley shares with its users—to improve and sustain the world’s infrastructure. The Applied Research Group executes its mission in the form of projects, much in the same way as Bentley users do. The Applied Research Group has formulated a collection of individual research projects for this year, each under the guidance of research directors within the Applied Research Group. Organized under the broad themes of the infrastructure lifecycle—design, build, and operate— the research includes technologies and concepts such as computational design, engineering optimization, work packaging, construction planning and management, change management, augmented reality, and real-time assets. These projects range from internal development projects to joint projects with universities and with Bentley users. After successfully identifying and validating the value of new technologies for Bentley users, the approach and requirements are then factored into the Bentley software product development plans. For example, GenerativeComponents and Dynamic Plots are innovative products that resulted from this process. Bentley events, prototype software implementations, and participation in Bentley’s community of Web sites. Introducing Volker Mueller In January Volker Mueller joined the Applied Research Group as the research director to lead Bentley’s efforts in computation design. He will be pursuing innovative ways to employ computation in the infrastructure design professions. In addition to exploring new approaches to rules-based design, generative design, and analytical design, he will investigate opportunities for providing real-time design performance feedback to architects and engineers. He will also be actively engaged in the strategy and vision for Bentley’s GenerativeComponents and will champion the use of this unique generative design software among architects and engineers as the starting point for further investigations of computational design. Mueller has more than 15 years of experience in design computing and a broad background in computational design theory and practice as well as an in-depth understanding of the challenges faced by infrastructure professionals. Prior to Bentley, Mueller was the design technology manager of NBBJ’s design technology group where he was responsible for developing and implementing the architectural firm’s design technology strategy. Seminar at BE Conference The Applied Research Group will be hosting a seminar as part of this year’s BE Conference in Baltimore, Md. The seminar will be held on Tues., May 27—the afternoon of the BE Conference 2008 kick-off— at the Baltimore Convention Center. The seminar will begin at 9 am, preceded by a continental breakfast and registration, which will open at 8 am. The broad theme of the seminar is the many aspects of sustainability. Opening remarks and a keynote presentation will be followed by sessions on computational design, construction and work packaging, and water loss. Each session will include a number of notable speakers from both academia and industry. There will also be updates on Bentley’s research projects and some technology demonstrations. Lunch will be provided. The seminar will conclude by 5 pm, in time to enjoy the Welcome Reception of the BE Conference in the exhibit hall. Register for the Applied Research seminar through the standard registration process for the BE Conference.
