BE Magazine - Volume 6, Issue 1 - (Page 11) DELIVERING A PROJECT MILESTONE “When there is a public/private partnership or any phenomenon when it is of the essence to minimize risk and maximize the performance of the project and the asset, the preferred delivery model is an integrated project delivery. In an integrated project delivery, all the participants share in the incentives and the risks. Then, the concern is not only delivering drawings or even models, but also delivering betterperforming projects and better-performing assets. Here is where firms design and build and operate to reuse that information—it is a service-level agreement with incentives about the performance of the infraL CEO Greg Bentley speaks at the Nov. 6, 2008, V8i launch in Philadelphia structure assets. And when there are investors—and we are all investors in infrastructure—and when the constituents to be served—the public—need and expect the project to be performing as well and as soon and as reliably as possible, then ultimately all of us will demand integrated project delivery via intelligent infrastructure. And that is the tremendous opportunity into which Bentley has launched our V8i software portfolio. The enablers of integrated project delivery were our priorities throughout the two-year development cycle for V8i —considering how to enable integrated project delivery, how information is reused throughout the asset lifecycle across the project teams and disciplines, and, by way of an interoperability platform, not only for the benefit of Bentley applications but also the enterprise environment in which that asset would live. So information reuse is an additional return on investment already made and is not only critical to new innovations, but also increasing— by extracting it—the value added by those who created it and enabling more lucrative returns and careers. Ultimately, for our professions, information modeling and intelligent infrastructure are the keys.” quickly, and iterate on designs extremely efficiently. And every copy of MicroStation V8i now includes GenerativeComponents. The output of GenerativeComponents is a DGN file, and you can combine that with everything for which you use MicroStation V8i. can be drawn one way, what’s on the left of the plane can be drawn a different way, and what intersects the plane can be drawn a third way,” that is what we mean by dynamic views. Now you can make everything on the right of this plane be Interactive dynamic views The new dynamic views concept is a programming technique that can be used by many people in many ways. Dynamic views addresses the issue of 2D versus 3D. In our development of dynamic views, we combined the best of 2D and 3D. What is 2D? It is merely a plane. You constrict yourself to living in a plane. Take a plane and apply it to a 3D model. Let’s just assume that the 3D model can come into existence automatically. If you throw a plane against a 3D model, planes do some simple things. They divide the world into three parts— the left of the plane, the right of the plane, and the stuff that intersects the plane. If you then take that simple concept and say, “What’s on the right of the plane transparent and everything on the left side of this plane drawn hidden lined. And everything that intersects the plane can be drawn using some cross-hatching pattern. Now if you are a 2D user, that view looks a lot like a drawing spun inside a model. And it is amazing how well people can grab that simple concept. You can have more than one plane, and you, therefore, can construct drawings that are like cutaway drawings. It makes the process of creating the 3D model and understanding the 3D model much simpler. For example, a boat is an object that scares people because the shell hides everything in it. By taking a few planes and using them to cut the pieces of the boat, we can see what is on the section planes, in the interior of the boat, and on the exterior of the boat. If we turn off both the sides of the plane and keep just the section geometry, what do we have? We have a 2D drawing. Now take a dynamic view of a model with a section plane on it in MicroStation V8i, use referencing techniques to put that on a sheet, and what do you have now? You have a 2D drawing. By taking a few simple concepts, planes, and display styles, you can make 2D drawings from 3D views of a 3D model. This concept is implemented in MicroStation V8i in a couple of ways.
