BE Magazine - Volume 6, Issue 1 - (Page 13) Integrated print organizer Another new feature of MicroStation V8i is one that you may not expect. When we surveyed users at our user conference, the number one request was to address the concept of coordinating out plot sets. Why? Because plotting from an application like MicroStation is not the same as plotting from Microsoft Word. You do not just do a File-Print. Instead, you create print sets and those sets have to be referenced together. When changes are made to project, you need to reissue the entire set as a single concept. MicroStation pre-V8i had some tools to do that—called batch plot—but they have been entirely replaced with Print Organizer. With Print Organizer, you merely dragand-drop the drawings that are going to be part of your print set with a GUI interface using a file that is called a print-set file and MicroStation V8i will automatically create the references and attachments to show that. Then, by just using the MicroStation V8i print-set command, you can generate a full print set of your entire project, much like you would have previously if you were using something like Interplot. “SAVING TIME AND WORKING FASTER are really what it’s all about. V8i makes it easy to move around projects and find precisely what we need. We can find the right design or sheet and get working fast with Project Explorer, and interact with models within drawing sheets with reference activation. There are so many ways to find design information, including dynamic views and saved views. In addition,V8i allows us to work seamlessly with DGN or DWG file formats.” Stuart Willows, Wm Saunders Partnership LLP graphics industry. So we have licensed its engine for embedding in MicroStation V8i. Now it is as easy to create an impressive, photorealistic image as pointing and clicking a digital camera. Luxology’s lighting model matches ours very closely and we were able to marry its material definitions pretty close to what we had done in MicroStation V8i. Everything you have already learned about MicroStation will apply to Luxology—only it will work a lot faster and be a lot more impressive. The speed is also impressive. This is in just about real time. A view in a MicroStation V8i window is going to come up and complete in a minute and a half and will probably as good as you have ever seen. Luxology can work on multiple cores, which means that it makes sense to purchase computers with four cores or eight cores. In the Luxology engine, there are tools to export to formats like PSD files. Rendering has truly become mainstream. In conclusion, perhaps the most welcome news is that Bentley has not changed the file format or added features that force you to retrain operators. So on the gain-versuspain scale, MicroStation V8i is heavily weighted toward gain. But the only way you are going to learn how MicroStation V8i can optimize your business processes is to use it. And when you do use it, you are going to have questions. And when you have questions, please start at Be Communities (http://communities.bentley.com), a tremendous resource. Not only have we placed a lot of our resources into things like wikis, but we also have assembled all product tech notes for all of our products in the Be Communities wiki. Which means you can read them, comment on them, and add new ones. In fact, I answer questions every day on Be Communities and would love to meet you there. Iterative Luxology rendering My last topic has to do with another strong demand we had from our user base. When you are creating these very valuable information models, what you most want to do with them is show them to people to validate that the design is correct, get approvals, and so on. MicroStation has had tools for a long time to create photorealistic output, but the workflows that involved exporting from MicroStation to some other pure rendering application added some inefficiency. Up to now, workflow also segregated the world into those who can render and those who cannot render. The MicroStation user became a second-class citizen even though he or she had a product capable of doing that. Since Bentley wanted to address this, we surveyed the industry. What we discovered is that there are organizations that are very good at creating rendering engines. At Bentley we have many things to do—and creating rendering engines is not one of them. So we decided to license a rendering engine from Luxology, a firm whose founders are some of the premier people in the computer About Keith Bentley Chief Technology Officer Keith Bentley co-founded Bentley in 1984 and has been a leader in the development of the company’s products ever since. He was Bentley’s CEO until 2000 and president until 1995, and has also served as a director and an executive officer since its inception. Bentley holds a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Delaware and a master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida.
