BE Magazine - Volume 6, Issue 1 - (Page 2) Quick Takes Volume 6, Issue 1 EDITOR IN CHIEF Anticipation’s Name Is V8i his issue of Be Magazine highlights one of the most significant releases in Bentley’s 24-year history. V8i is a comprehensive software portfolio that features the breadth and depth of technology needed for fully integrated project delivery throughout the lifecycle for all types of infrastructure assets. Designed from the ground up to be adopted with minimal disruption to business processes, the manage/ transform/distribute capabilities of the interoperability platform enables it to work across disciplines and geographies. The article “Bentley Launches the Most Comprehensive Software Portfolio for Infrastructure Ever Assembled in a Single Release,” which begins on page 4, provides an overview of V8i’s features and benefits, which include increased information quality, enhanced infrastructure asset quality, improved operational safety, reduced project costs, and shortened delivery times. V8i moves beyond merely computer-aiding the production of traditional deliverables—including design, drawings, and models—by providing capabilities to increase cost efficiencies and maximize the return on investments in innovation to design, build, and operate better-performing infrastructure projects and assets. CTO Keith Bentley’s article that follows on page 8—“MicroStation V8i Up Close & Personal”—explains how Bentley decides what to include in a release, particularly a release as comprehensive as MicroStation V8i. Not surprisingly, he notes, the key new features in MicroStation V8i are the ones most suggested by Bentley’s software users themselves. For instance, MicroStation V8i’s interactive dynamic views not only solves the problem of coordination between 2D drawing production and 3D models, but also simplifies the 3D model creation process and scalability to larger data sets and design scenarios. Next up is a series of stories that focus on trends to watch in 2009. “Is Water the New Oil?” on page 16 discusses how in spite of its fundamental importance to human society, an astounding amount of clean water is lost from our water distribution systems. In “How Does Intent Become Reality?” (page 18), learn how architects and engineers can now use rule-based design parameters and geometric relationships to create complex building components, then automatically apply changes in the parameters throughout the models to test the constructability of their designs. The article on page 20 “Does Performance Create Sustainability?” discusses the availability of a growing number of highly integrated, advanced software tools that architects, engineers, and low-carbon consultants can deploy to address the increasing demand for buildings designed with lifecycle performance in mind. As usual, this issue of Be Magazine provides its geographically diversified selection of inspiring projects designed and built by Bentley users. This issue’s stories range from a bridge in Minnesota (page 22), airport in Australia (page 23), rapid rail system in South Africa (page 41), and high-capacity wastewater treatment facility in Florida (page 42) to a hydropower dam in China (page 39), mining operations in the Dominican Republic (page 30), oil booster pump station in Siberia (page 32), and a liquid natural gas terminal in Norway (page 34).
