In the last four years, the company has installed scrubbers at 10 units at four plants throughout the Southeast, according to Edgar Nunez, engineering and construction services civil design supervisor, Southern Company (Birmingham, Ala.). Installation of additional scrubbers over the next several years is forecasted to further reduce SO2 emissions from current levels. Southern Company emphasizes environmental responsibility in all of its operations and is committed to minimizing its impact on the “With environmental projects, we have to keep in mind that the plant has to be available to run at all times, and we have to minimize any interruption of service while we install the new equipment,” Nunez explained. “We do a lot of simulations and modeling, and we engage teams from the plants and construction to plan all the details before we put the ﬁrst crew on the ground.” Environmental projects are currently planned for plants throughout Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi.
