The majority of equipment and components are installed while units are online to reduce tie-in outage time. Designers use Bentley software to run the simulations that keep downtime to a minimum. These issues are corrected at the design stage rather than in the ﬁeld, where rework would be costly. Conducting construction simulations, including crane location studies, helps the team deﬁne what manpower and equipment resources will be required. “By using simulations and models, we can determine what resources are required before the project starts and ﬁgure out the best way to efﬁciently sequence the projects,” Nunez said. “We identify the requirements of each individual project, then put them all together to determine the best execution sequence for manpower and equipment from plant to plant.” The interoperability of Bentley products enables the design team to make more efﬁcient use of its time. Reusing design components saves engineering time, and detecting and eliminating interferences at the design stage avoids time-consuming rework during construction. “The fact that we are able to use design components that have been checked and proven successful saves time, instead of starting from scratch on every project,” noted Nunez. “We can use safe and reliable solutions that have been ﬁeld-tested.” The department’s improved efﬁciency allows the design team to tackle multiple concurrent environmental projects with the same amount of personnel. Scrubbers can remove more than 95 percent of SO2 emissions that result from burning coal that contains SO2. Inside the scrubber, combustion emissions are exposed to a water and limestone mixture. The SO2 reacts with the limestone slurry to form gypsum, which is a reusable compound. The remaining water vapor rises out of the stack. Southern Company’s engineering team has developed a standard scrubber island design that can be used from plant to plant with only minor changes in how components are attached, depending on space constraints. In addition, ﬂue gas ductwork is modularized and process tanks are standardized for as many units as possible.
