BE Magazine - Volume 6, Issue 1 - (Page 52) Tech Notes A Contemporary Approach to Site Design West Point trains its future engineers on civil software technology for military and civilian careers o keep pace with technological innovation, the civil engineer of the future must be dynamic, flexible, agile, and able to learn new concepts, according to “The Engineer of 2020” Phase I project report by the National Academy of Engineering. Engineering knowledge must be complemented by such attributes as strong analytical skills, practical ingenuity, leadership abilities, and high ethical standards. Engineering instructors are charged with helping students develop these attributes along with an understanding of the “Body of Knowledge for the 21st Century” as defined by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). To be effective, ASCE concludes, faculty must be scholars, teachers, practitioners, and role models. These principles are taken to heart at the U.S. Military Academy, where leaders of character have been educated, trained, and inspired since 1802. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point graduates more than 900 officers annually, or about 25 percent of the lieutenants who enter the Army each year. The mission of West Point’s Civil and T Mechanical Engineering Department is to commission cadets who can understand, implement, and manage technology throughout their military careers. The highly competitive program, which is accredited by ABET, Inc., awards a bachelor of science degree in four years. “Most other engineering programs have students for five years with internships,” said LTC Joseph Hanus, director of the Mechanics Group and an assistant professor in the Academy’s Civil Engineer program. “Our challenge is that cadets are only here for four years. Then they serve the nation as U.S. Army officers for at least eight years, five of which are spent on active duty.” West Point’s academic program provides a wide base of general knowledge and intellectual skills as well as the fundamentals of civil engineering. The Civil Engineering Site Design course was developed in 2004 to provide an overview of land development and site design, and for cadets to learn how to apply civil engineering software solutions. “When we started teaching the course, 52 Be Magazine | Volume 6 Issue 1
