Berkeley Official Visitors Guide 2008/2009 - (Page 24) » Shopping / Downtown The Heart of the City Welcome to downtown Berkeley, a vibrant city center with a growing arts district at its core! Downtown Berkeley Arts District Berkeley’s most beloved cultural icons are congregating in the Downtown Berkeley Arts District, offering a rich diversity of cultural arts and entertainment. The Arts District is centered on Addison Street, between Shattuck Avenue and Milvia Street. Once filled with auto body shops, Addison Street has now blossomed into a hub of live music, live theatre, and performing arts education. Off Addison, many other venues welcome you to enjoy even more arts experiences. Poetry and Literature Follow the Berkeley Poetry Walk, a firstof-its-kind public art project that features 128 cast-iron panels of poetry embedded into the sidewalk of Addison Street. Around the corner, three bookstores on Shattuck Avenue feature many types of literature, graphic novels, and art books. Dining Dining options are abundant with food from over 15 different ethnicities, ranging from quick food to gourmet and from organic juice to Berkeley-brewed beer. Be sure to stroll down Center Street’s Restaurant Row where you can enjoy an elegant dinner under the stars. Afterwards, visit one of our unique pubs and cafés for a lively conversation with friends. Cinema 19 screens at five movie theatres offer the best in independent, foreign, documentary, and Hollywood films.
