Berkeley Official Visitors Guide 2008/2009 - (Page 26) » Shopping / Telegraph Avenue For decades, poets, artists, musicians and students have enjoyed the energetic atmosphere of one of the Bay Area’s oldest and most distinctive commercial districts. Inextricably linked to the political and social events of the 1960’s, Telegraph Avenue has a rich history that dates back much further. Today, its multi-layered character attracts a diverse mix of students, residents and out-of-town visitors. Telegraph Avenue is home to historic institutions, independent book and music stores, colorful street vendors, vintage clothing shops, upscale boutiques, and dozens of restaurants and cafes serving a variety of international cuisine. Every building and block has a story, from the architectural masterpieces by Julia Morgan and Bernard Maybeck to the modern structures of the surrounding university. A tour of the Telegraph neighborhood typically begins at the University of California, with its park-like campus, historic buildings and monuments, and world-class cultural events. Telegraph’s north end leads directly to Sproul Plaza, birthplace of the Free Speech Movement. Not far away is People’s Park, deeply rooted in Berkeley’s history and the site of protests and peace marches. Telegraph has additional shopping treasures as one strolls south from campus toward Dwight Way. Several small, renowned ethnic restaurants inhabit this block and can be found in almost hidden courtyards. Walk into the Village, a charming, indoor courtyard of shops and ethnic restaurants. New adventures in clothing, both new and vintage, are featured in this area as well. Although the street widens dramatically at Dwight Way, the special shopping treats continue. Telegraph is also a fun place to stay. Within one block of the heart of Telegraph Avenue are two preserved, historic hotels—the Beau Sky and Hotel Durant. Both are located on Durant Avenue in an equally bustling part of the Telegraph shopping area. Telegraph is a feast for the eyes. It is the perennial favorite among Bay Area residents for people watching and creative pursuits. As you stroll this famous avenue, attentive eyes will notice art in many forms from poster shops to distinctive handcrafts to decorated store windows. Some businesses regularly display works by local artists. Telegraph Avenue is a dynamic, bustling bohemian place with something for everyone. It is a must-see for anyone exploring the treasures of Berkeley, and is easily accessible via public transportation. For those who drive, parking at the Telegraph Channing Garage is not only convenient but is also discounted with merchant validation.
