Entrances are off Wildcat Canyon Rd. and Grizzly Peak Blvd. Botanic Garden The Botanic Garden was founded on January 1, 1940. The Botanic Garden is devoted to the collection, growth, display and preservation of the native plants of California. California embraces nearly 160,000 square miles—imagine 160,000 square miles of California set in a 10-acre garden that can be walked in a day. Codornices Park 1201 Euclid Avenue (Between Eunice St. & Bayview Place) A wide array of play opportunities are available in a beautiful hillside setting: baseball/softball fields, basketball court, tot play area, picnic/BBQ area (reservation required), hiking trails through glade and groves of magnificent oaks, bay trees and redwood, a vista/overlook, two forks of Codornices Creek and a tunnel underneath Euclid Ave. leading to the Berkeley Rose Garden. Aquatic Park Bolivar Way at Bancroft Way (Between Ashby & University Avenues) Aquatic Park provides plenty of opportunities for bird watching, boating, hiking trails and biking trails around the lake. Frisbee Golf in the meadows. There is also a fitness exercise course, “Dream Land for Kids,” a playground featuring extensive wooden castles, walkways and other structures, as well as a habitat for bird and aquatic life. Limited parking is available on the east side of the park. Open 6am-10pm, unless otherwise posted. Lake Anza for Swimming & Fishing Just over the hill from Berkeley, Tilden Park’s Lake Anza is a favorite getaway. Its sandy beach is open to the sun and sheltered from the wind, with lifeguards posted during the swim season. Wheelchair accessible features include a snack stand, drinking water, ample parking, and trail access. Picnic grounds are located nearby. There is an entrance fee to the swim area, which has changing rooms and a refreshment stand. The lake is open for fishing throughout the year. Cesar Chavez Park Berkeley Marina at Spinnaker Way 90 rolling acres and 1.5 miles of paved trails. Wildlife sanctuary, sports fields, paved pathways, picnic areas and wideopen meadowlands for Frisbee and kite flying. Hiking and biking allowed. Open daily, dawn to dusk. The Site of the Annual International Kite Festival in July. Berkeley Rose Garden Euclid Ave. and Bayview Place The Berkeley Rose Garden is located next to Codornices Park. A total of 3.64 acres of row upon row of fragrant roses. The garden has a redwood pergola, 4 tennis courts, a picnic area, hiking trails, foot bridges, a semi-circular terraced amphitheatre and an ornamental pool fed by Codornices Creek, which runs through the garden. Merry-Go-Round Tilden’s Herschell-Spillman merry-goround is a splendid antique carousel with hand-carved and beautifully painted wooden carousel animals to ride. The calliope plays music to make any child’s heart sing. The facility offers a wheelchair accessible snack stand, drinking water, restroom and parking Hours of operation: 11am-5pm weekdays and holidays, and on weekends during school spring and summer vacation. After Labor Day hours are weekends only 11am-5pm weather permitting. Fee (subject to change): $1 per ride; $10 for 13-ride ticket book. For information call (510) 524-6773. Shorebird Nature Center Berkeley Marina (510) 981-6720 The Shorebird Nature center is home to a 100-gallon salt-water aquarium, which displays creatures that live in the San Francisco Bay. There is also a touch table and other wildlife exhibits. Open Tue-Sat 9am-5pm.
