Berkeley Official Visitors Guide 2008/2009 - (Page 7) Public Art Maudelle Shirek Mural Location: Maudelle Shirek Building (formerly Old City Hall) at 2134 Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Berkeley The mural depicts the life and works of one of Berkeley’s eminent proponents of civil rights and social responsibility, from her childhood in Jefferson, Arkansas, to her coming to Oakland and Berkeley in the 1940”s. Ms Shirek was an elected member of the Berkeley City Council for over twenty years. Artists Daniel Galvez and Mildred Howard painted the mural. They were chosen as part of an open public process. This mural is a public art project of the City of Berkeley 1.5% for art program. » The Mandella Gates Location: City of Berkeley Corporation Yard, Bancroft Street side, 1326 Allston Way. Artist Eric Powell was chosen by an open, public process to design and construct two sets of cut out steel gates for the Bancroft side of the City of Berkeley Corporation Yard. These original steel cut out gates are a form of “functional“ public art. They depict the history of the neighborhood, native plants and the tools of the city workers in the Corporation Yard. This project is part of the City of Berkeley 1.5% for art public art program. West Berkeley Train Stop Location: Under the University Avenue overpass on University Avenue between Fourth and Third Streets This public art project unites the entire space with murals, color and poetry. The themes honor the original native peoples; well know Berkeley residents and the idea of arriving and departing. The artist is John Wehrle and the poet is Betsey Davids. Both were chosen by an open public process as part of the 1.5% for art program of the Civic Arts Office, the Redevelopment Agency and the Civic Arts Commission.
