2008 BICSI Fall Conference - (Page 7) SCHeDULe ings. This seminar does not cover L-Band overlay, but will speak to the adding and troubleshooting of digital QAM. q “grounding Systems: Why Important and Why Testing is Invalid 9% of the Time,” John R. Howard, Lyncole XiT Grounding, Torrance, California 3 CECs – RCDD, NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, WD Specialty, ITS Installer/Technician No one questions the fact that the grounding system for a facility is critical. Along with being critical for equipment operation and power quality, it also dissipates the electrical surges “collected” by the surge suppression (AC, RF, Telco) and lightning protection systems. Recognizing the importance of the grounding system, this seminar will cover the basics of two common methods of test, present a oneline electrical diagram explanation of test theory and discuss the common mistakes. Regardless of your role in construction and/or maintenance, you will learn ground testing concepts and how to evaluate testing results. q “Cost Model From TIa FOLS Helps Users Identify Solutions that Offer High performance, Cost effectively,” Andrew Oliviero, OFS, Norcross, Georgia; Rodney Casteel, RCDD, CommScope, Villa Rica, Georgia; and Robert Reid, Panduit, Orland Park, Illinois 3 CECs – RCDD, NTS Specialty, OSP Specialty, ITS Installer/Technician and performance advantages of optical fiber in a cost-effective manner: (1) fiber to the telecommunications enclosure (FTTE) and, (2) Centralized Cabling, also known as FTTD. We will begin with a review of the various TIA 568-based architecture options. The key building blocks of FTTE and FTTD networks, such as zone switches and media converters, and the performance advantages will be described. To better understand the impact of different network architectures on cost we will show the results of an updated cost model created by TIA’s Fiber Optic LAN Section (FOLS) and provide guidelines for selecting the most cost-effective solutions based on application scenarios. Consequently, attendees will have a chance to see how such new architectures open up the possibilities of high bandwidth and cost-effectiveness. 2-5 p.m. Standards Committee Meeting 3-7:30 p.m. Exhibit Hall Visitor Registration 4-4:30 p.m. First Timers Orientation (repeat) 4:30-7:30 p.m. BICSI Reception and Exhibits 5:30-6 p.m. and 6:30-7 p.m. What’s New? This is making optical fiber-based network architectures a compelling choice for new networks and upgrades. Traditionally, the hierarchical star topology based on copper and fiber has been used. However, since the ratification of the TIA-568 standard, two additional network architectures have been standardized that offer users the extended reach TUeSDaY SepTeMBeR 0 7:15 a.m.-7 p.m. BICSI Community: Attendee Registration and Information, BICSI Central, BICSI Cares, BICSI Store, Wi-Fi Zone 7:15 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Exhibitor Registration 7:15-8:15 a.m. Continental Breakfast and Exhibits 8:45-9:30 a.m. Opening Keynote Speaker—Ken Schmidt, a specialist in corporate positioning and media relations, started his own business, Ken Schmidt Company, in 1999. That was, however, after spending 12 years working for Harley-Davidson and two years in partial-ownership of Chicago-based VCA Partners marketing firm. Beginning in 1985, Ken worked with Harley-Davidson to successfully restore the company’s image and increase sales. He also became the company’s director of corporate and financial communications and served as its spokesperson to media and financial communities. From 1997 to mid-1999, Ken’s time with VCA Partners allowed him to work with brands such as General Motors, Coca-Cola, IBM and Campbell’s 2008 BICSI Fall Conference | page 7
