What will differentiate them from others in the industry is that both firms are
advice-driven. IPI's business is based
on deep relationships with community
banks, providing ongoing advice to
clients. Ameriprise's business, with
its predilection for certified financial
planners (CFPs), is built on an advice
model, O'Connell says.
Some independent brokerage firm
executives predicted that compressed

industry profit margins (a consequence of record low interest rates)
and uncertainty over the DOL's
fiduciary rule would prompt further
industry consolidation in 2017. Was
that the case here?
"We feel good about the position we're
in," says O'Connell, referring to the
DOL rule. Last year, the firm worked
through all aspects of the Labor
Department's proposal. With the firm's

historic partiality for CFPs, and financial planning generally, Ameriprise was
already arguably acting as a fiduciary.
It is well positioned for the post-DOL
world, O'Connell says.
What then is the biggest challenge
that lies ahead?
"Bringing IPI onto our platform will
take time," O'Connell says. Much of the
6-8 months following the integration
will be spent integrating the two operations teams. Again, O'Connell emphasizes that IPI will operate as a separate
channel and not merge into Ameriprise's independent B/D operations.
After regulatory review, the transaction
closed in the third quarter of 2017,
adding 215 advisors to Ameriprise's
talent pool. ▲
