It is not as dry as the Kona side, but the rains here have the courtesy to wait mostly for evening and are responsible for the rich greenery that colors everything. To experience all the attractions here, consider splitting up your Big Island vacation to stay a few days on the Hilo side. The drive between Hilo and Kona gives visitors the opportunity to visit such attractions as the Ellison Onizuka Astronomy Complex. For those who prefer not to drive, Island Air offers inexpensive fares between Hilo and Kona. Here you’ll discover lovely beaches and tide pools as well as evidence of past lava flows. After stopping for a bite to eat in one of the quaint restaurants the town of Pahoa offers, visit Lava Tree State Park, ¯ site of the hollow tree forest created by hardened lava encapsulating tree trunks. The scenic drive down Pohoiki Road leads to coastal area parks with their numerous tide-pools for wading and volcano-heated ponds for dipping. Further west along the shore is the “other side” of Chain of Craters Road, severed from its namesake by the early Keaÿau Kurtistown u Keaÿa PUNA Kaloli Pt Mountain View Hilo Coffee Mill - P äh Rd oa Honolulu Landing To Volcano Pähoa 0 0 5 mi 10 km Lava Tree State Park Cape Kumukahi Cape Kumukahi Lighthouse 24 www.bigisland.org http://www.palmscliffhouse.com http://www.palmscliffhouse.com http://www.bigisland.org
