Hilo is the cultural center of the island of Hawai‘i. You’ll want to check out the galleries and museums in Historic Downtown Hilo and don’t miss the Farmers Market held every Wednesday and Saturday. Hilo is a major port and college town, so there’s definitely a scene here with unique restaurants and quaint boutiques. Lining Hilo Bay, beautiful large trees lend their name to the resort district along Banyan Drive. The trees are their own attraction, having been planted years ago by the likes of Babe Ruth and Amelia Earhart. Hotels, shops and restaurants also circle the bay drive. The Lyman Museum & Mission House is a restored former missionary residence that was built in 1839. This oldest frame building in Hilo includes a large collection of artifacts from the many ethnic groups who immigrated to Hawai‘i. The museum offers Hilo walking tours and cultural demonstrations by reservation.
