Big Island Vacation Guide 2009 - (Page 14) Hiking & Camping Hiking There are miles and miles of hiking trails on the island of Hawai‘i. With so many climate zones to choose from, you can hike a sandy coastal trail one day, climb to the snow-covered summit another and trek to see molten lava splashing into the sea the next. There are trails for all levels. Hearty hikers should consider hiking the 4-mile Kı ¯lauea Iki Trail in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Backpacking in the Maunaloa wilderness is for experienced physically fit adventurers only. Beginners are welcome on the Onomea Trail north of Hilo and the Ala Kahakai Trail along the Kohala Coast as well as many other interesting trails around the island. Whether planning to spend your whole vacation in the great outdoors or just a couple of nights, you’ll enjoy getting back to nature on the island of Hawai‘i. Permits are required for all county parks that allow camping. Individual park descriptions and permits are available through the county website. State Park requirements vary. The state website provides a permit application and other valuable information for planning your camping excursion. There are also camping areas within Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Advanced reservations may be made for cabins at the Namakanipaio ¯ campsite through the Volcano House.
