Sizzle Reel

The two-screen independent movie house
Metrograph opened in the Lower East Side.
Founder Alexander Olch also designed the
space, which features seats milled from wood
beams from Brooklyn's former Domino Sugar
Refinery and a Dolby Audio Server in Theater
1 from the recently closed Ziegfeld Theater.
Theater 1 seats 175 people, including a balcony
for 23 people, while Theater 2 seats 50. In May,
the venue opened Commissary, a set of food
and beverage spaces that include a downstairs lobby bar and an upstairs restaurant,
bar and 23-seat private dining room. The
upstairs and downstairs spaces each hold
receptions of 250 guests. The venue also
includes a bookshop dedicated to cinema. (7

In October, the iPic movie chain opened
its first New York location in downtown's
South Street Seaport neighborhood. The
42,766-square-foot 1 iPic Fulton Market has
eight screening rooms that seat a total of 500
people. The entire venue, which offers restaurant-style cuisine and waiter service in each
screening room, holds about 840 for receptions. The theater has NEC Digital projectors,
Strong/MDI screens, and a bar called the
Tuck Room. Each room has custom seating
pods with sound-absorbing technology to
ensure guests experience the full effect of
the 7.1 channel Dolby digital sound, as well as
built-in cubbyholes for guests to stash shoes
and bags. Guests can opt for premium levels
of service that offer perks such as courtesy
pillows, blankets, and unlimited popcorn, as
well as push-button access to a "dining in
the dark" menu by chief restaurant officer
Sherry Yard, along with libations from master
bartender/advanced sommelier Adam Seger.

out of the box
These museums and galleries
offer versatile event spaces.

The New York Marble Cemetery, located in the
East Village, offers a magically macabre outdoor
space for a variety of events-except funerals;
the last interment occurred in 1937. From
weddings and birthday parties to fund-raisers
and fashion shows, such as Stella McCartney's
resort collection presentation in 2012, the halfacre garden is available for private parties or
corporate events, with a maximum crowd of 150
people. The fees help the cemetery's caretakers
maintain and restore the centuries-old marble
walls, which surround the burial ground. (41 1/2

The Children's Museum of the Arts is an
interactive kids' museum in the South Village
district that offers contemporary art exhibits and
hands-on workshops for kids ages 1 to 15. The
museum underwent renovations in 2015, which
included converting a ball pit area into the Swirl

The 1 South Street Seaport Museum
bounced back from Hurricane Sandy by reopening to the public in March 2016 with its first
exhibit since 2012 and the renovated historic
Wavertree iron ship, which serves as the
museum's event venue. The 130-year-old cargo
ship, which was first acquired by the museum
in 1968, underwent a $13 million renovation that
included the replacement of the deck between
the main deck and hold. Other updates include
the restoration of the ship's masts and rigging
and the addition of protective coating and
audiovisual equipment hookups. The ship has
a 9,000-square-foot main deck along with a
deck of the same size below and is available for
reception-style events of as many as 300 people.
