Find specialty fare from ethnic
cuisine to meat-free menus at
these new restaurants.
A second, larger location of the French bakery
and café 1 Maman opened in TriBeCa in
December 2015. The eatery serves seasonal
South of France fare from Michelin-starred chef
Armand Arnal in a 2,000-square-foot space with
generous 16-foot ceilings. In the front is a casual
room with counter service and cozy daybed-like
seating. The back dining area, called the salle a
manger, has its own bar and can be used for private
events. The room has moveable communal tables
that seat a total of 40 people; the room holds 60
for cocktails. The look mixes vintage and Frenchcountry styles with exposed whitewashed bricks,
dark wood floors, and blue and white accents.

Open since June at the 11 Howard hotel in
SoHo, Le Coucou is a classic upscale French eatery
from restaurateur Stephen Starr and chef Daniel
Rose, who built his reputation at his Paris restaurants Spring and La Bourse et La Vie. Designed
by Roman & Williams, Le Coucou seats 85 in a
rustic atmosphere with oak tables, brick walls,
and hardwood floors. Diners can choose from an
à la carte menu that includes quenelle de brochet,

pheasant, and prime filet, plus cocktails and wine.

The Mexican restaurant Lalo opened in
November in the Chinatown space where
Winnie's Bar & Restaurant used to be. The eatery,
which has a 1970s-style atmosphere, seats 50
in the main dining area and 12 at the bar. (104

Café Altro Paradiso, an Italian eatery, opened
in February 2016 in the Hudson Square neighborhood. Designed by David M. Sullivan, the 80-seat
restaurant has a brass-topped oak bar with 14
seats, a partially open kitchen, and a menu that
includes ravioli di ricotta, tagliatelle al pesto

2 Freud is an Austrian brasserie from chef
Eduard Frauneder that opened in February 2016
in Greenwich Village. The 65-seat restaurant
was designed by Florian Altenburg and includes
banquette and bar seating as well as design

In November, chef/owner Stephan Brezinsky
debuted the Vietnamese restaurant Chao Chao
in the space formerly occupied by Soothsayer.
The 75-seat eatery in the East Village has a menu
that includes char-grilled swordfish, beef cheeks

Open since July, the vegetarian restaurant
Ladybird serves its cuisine in small plates. The
42-seat restaurant in the West Village has a menu
that includes caramelized artichoke heart, saffron

Fish Cheeks, open since August in NoHo, is a
58-seat Thai restaurant that is owned by brothers
Chat and Ohm Suansilphong, who are both chefs
at the eatery. The menu includes pad cha, bird'seye chiles, and Thai-influenced cocktails. (55 Bond

Harold's Meat & Three opened in September
on the ground floor of the Arlo Hudson Square
hotel. The American restaurant from chef Harold
Moore seats 130 and serves Southern-style takes
on fare such as prime rib and fried chicken.

Alessandro Borgognone, the restaurateur
behind Sushi Nakazawa, has reinvented
3 Chumley's, the West Village bar that closed
in 2007. The venue, which reopened in October,
is now a 60-seat restaurant with a menu of
American cuisine that changes frequently but
maintains favorites such as the Chumley's

In July, Ravi DeRossi and Daniel Kessler
relocated their seafood restaurant Bergen Hill
from Brooklyn to Manhattan's East Village. The
40-seat eatery has a menu that includes oysters,
black bass, lobster, and a variety of vegetables

Located in the West Village, Seabird opened
in July and has a seafood-focused MediterraneanAmerican menu. The 1,000-square-foot restaurant seats 50 in the main dining room and 28 on
