T

he oldest part of New York City is
also in some ways its newest. In a
city constantly reinventing itself,
lower Manhattan has experienced
a surge of development that has
reshaped its identity-and made it an attractive
destination for meetings and events.
BizBash has always covered new and renovated
venues across the city's five boroughs. But for the
first time, we have created a standalone publication
to supplement the BizBash Best national venue and
supplier guide. For this inaugural issue, we chose
to focus on lower Manhattan-defined as the area
south of 14th Street-which has truly become a
new downtown for New York.
The goal is to share the best of downtown with
planners from out of town as well as New Yorkers
who haven't yet discovered the area's many gems.

Today, if you don't know downtown Manhattan, you
truly don't know New York.
Here we introduce a variety of new hotels, restaurants, conference centers, bars and lounges, museums,
and other spaces that are available for events. For
events large or small, formal or casual, these venues
present unique ways to experience the city.
The guide also offers a sneak peek into the
venues that are planning to open in the coming
years, from the Public Hotel from master hotel and
nightlife innovator Ian Schrager to the Ronald O.
Perelman Performing Arts Center planned to open
in 2020 as part of the World Trade Center site.
Of course, these exciting changes to downtown
were born out of tragedy. The terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001, devastated lower Manhattan.
Then, in 2012, Hurricane Sandy created new havoc as
it flooded roads, buildings, and transportation lines.

But from those trials has come new ideas,
energy, and destinations. The city's tallest skyscraper,
One World Trade Center-including its three-floor
One World Observatory-is Manhattan's new
southern anchor. Next to it is another instant-icon:
Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava's Oculus at
Westfield World Trade Center. The building-and its
$4 billion price tag-are stunning. Its bright white
exoskeleton is like nothing else in the city.
Fashion, tech, publishing, and, of course, finance
have discovered the area. So has the Four Seasons.
And also Shake Shack. It's an exciting time to be
planning meetings and events here.
It's important to note that the boom
downtown isn't coming at the expense of other
parts of the city. In fact, more people than ever
visited New York in 2016, with a record 60 million
people traveling to the city. Of that, more than 10
percent-or 6.15 million-were meeting delegates.
We invite you to discover the best venues of
downtown Manhattan-and then to experience it
with your own event there.
