BLITZ Magazine Demo - (Page 42) Blitz: What’s it like being a Miami Hurricane? KP: It means a lot to me. There is a lot of tradition here. Blitz: How have things been going adjusting to the new coaching staff? KP: I’m loving it. Coach has a great attitude and is willing to do what it takes to win. Coach Shannon is promoting an everything teamwork philosophy. There are no individuals. Blitz: How far are the Hurricanes from becoming the football powerhouse they once were? KP: One win away. Blitz: What are you majoring in? KP: Sports administration. Blitz: Are you a pretty good student? KP: 3.2 GPA, Academic All-American. Twice. Blitz: Did you ever play any other position? KP: Quarterback, wide receiver. I didn’t start playing safety til high school. Blitz: Where did you go to high school? KP: Carol City High [Miami]. Blitz:What do you work on to improve each offseason? KP: To be the spark for my team. To be the motivator. Blitz: What have you been working on this off-season? KP: My all-around game: tackling, attempting to get more explosive, footwork, watching film. Blitz: What do you like most about your position? KP: You can take over the game. If you’re as good a safety as you’re supposed to be, teams don’t want to throw to your area. Blitz: Who’s your favorite NFL player? KP: Ed Reed and Sean Taylor. Those are my role model guys who I look up to. I believe Ed [Reed] is the best safety in the game. Every time he’s down I talk to him. Blitz: How often do you guys talk? KP: I talk to him three to four times a month. Blitz: Between Reed and Taylor, whose style of play does yours resemble more? KP: It’s a mixture of both of those guys. Ed [Reed] thinks more, is about positioning. Sean wants to hit you. I’m like that too. I like to put the fear into your heart. I take it as a gesture of disrespect when I see a receiver come over the middle. Blitz: What are you thinking right before you lay a big hit? KP: I’m thinking, ‘I can’t believe it’. It’s like ‘wow, did you not see me there?’ Blitz: Would you consider yourself a student of the game? KP: Definitely a student of the game. I have so much to learn. Blitz: How would you rate your season last year? KP: From one to ten, I’d probably give it a seven. Once I got hurt, I got down on myself. Blitz: How did you break your hand? KP: I injured it in practice blocking a punt. I was kicked in the hand. I had to have surgery on it and missed the next three games. Blitz: How is the hand now? KP: No problems at all. Safety Warning Kenny Phillips doesn’t tell you how good he is. He shows you. In his own soft-spoken and modest way, the University of Miami star took the time to sit down with Blitz and tell us a little bit about playing and living in his hometown of Miami, about himself, his family, his relationship with NFL superstar Ed Reed.
