nailba's agency successor networking group

Our Transitions: You're Invited

A

JERRY THOMAS
CHAIR, ASNG

s the new chair of the
Agency Successor Networking Group (ASNG),
I've been charged by the ASNG
Steering Committee (Lauri Beck,
Christi Daughenbaugh, John Gilbert, Varsha Grogan, David Long,
Melinda Meyer, and Michael Wholehan) to bring the ASNG to a more
forward-facing space in NAILBA.
This is a time of great opportunity
and great transition for our association and our industry, and the
members of the ASNG are uniquely
poised to lead our association and
the brokerage community forward.
We recently gathered by conference call to formulate goals. We
identified the following:
■■ Recruit new members
■■ Energize existing members
■■ Engage members who have
completed their transition
to principal
Are you interested in joining
the ASNG? If you are in the process of developing or executing
a succession plan for your agency, you should review the qualifications for membership and apply.
Although a significant portion of
our membership comes through
family succession, we encourage
non-family successors who may be
non-owners and practice management specialists to join.
Participants must meet two or
more of the following criteria to
be eligible to participate in ASNG:
■■ Recently began serving as an
agency principal (suggested
guideline 1-3 years)
■■ Designated as the successor
to a NAILBA agency via verbal
or written commitment, and

is scheduled to take over the
agency in the near future (suggested guideline 1-5 years)
■■ Currently has at least 25% ownership in an agency and has
been given at least verbal commitment of succession by sitting principal
■■ Recommended by the agency
principal with the commitment that the participant will
succeed the sitting principal
in the near future (suggested
guideline 1-5 years)
You can find an application
online at http://www.nailba.org/
membership/asng or email Susan
Klemmer, the ASNG staff liaison,
for one (sklemmer@nailba.org).
We have over 30 existing members of the ASNG, all in various
stages of transition. Our bi-monthly conference calls focus on a variety of agency management issues
and are delivered by experts within the brokerage industry. Recent
speakers have included Dan Eibner of NBA; Joe Bosnack of Katz,
Nassau Agency; Joe Lamberson of
Via Consulting Group; and Melinda Meyer of Aspen Strategies.
Each call is recorded and available to members of the group who
were unable to participate in real
time. We are also setting up a separate online community within
NAILBA Network for ASNG members
and mentors. This forum will provide opportunities to share realtime issues and answers, library
resources, and a central location
to post the recorded sessions. Recognizing that our member agencies
have their own businesses to run,
this forum, like NAILBA Network,

gives ASNG members 24/7 access
to their peers and the information NAILBA is providing to support them.
As more of our members transition to their own roles as principal, we'll be inviting them to
return to the group as presenters rather than participants to
share their experiences. We are
also developing a panel discussion
for our face-to-face workshop at
NAILBA 37, using an Ask Me Anything style to discuss what our
members have learned from being
part of this group.
In short, the ASNG is here to
stay and will be growing and
evolving along with the rest of
NAILBA over the coming years. We
invite you to be a part of our transition, and to let us help you with
your own transition issues.
You can read more about the
importance of a succession plan
and the value of the ASNG in this
issue's feature article, Succession
Planning: Why You Need to Plan
Now and How to Start Even if You'd
Rather Not.
If you are interested in joining contact Jerry Thomas at

Klemmer at sklemmer@nailba.org.
