On average, 240 new members joined every month in 2007, and membership grew by 41% during the year. Associate level membership increased by about 13% with the Asia-Pacific region claiming the majority of Associate members. As a result of the SIG’s announcement of ultra low power Bluetooth technology, several leading companies in industries new to the SIG joined and upgraded their membership to participate in specification development and profile working groups. EUroPE, MIDDLE EaSt, afrICa 63 aMErICaS 63 BLUETOOTH SIG ASSOCIATE MEMBERS, 31 DECEMBER 2007 aSIa-PaCIfIC 158 NEw MarkEtS The past year contained some surprises in Bluetooth market data and forecasts. For instance, as the popularity of consoles such as the Nintendo Wii and Sony PlayStation 3 grew, the gaming and controller segment saw 85 million devices being shipped, surpassing even headsets in device volumes. Looking to the near future, ABI Research forecasts health, sports, and medical monitoring applications to contribute strongly to the growth of ultra low power Bluetooth technology, with 140 million Bluetooth enabled devices shipping per year in these categories by 2012. Among the more established markets, Bluetooth technology has achieved close to full penetration in mobile phones in many areas of the world, at 75% of new phones in Western Europe and 63%, a dramatic year-over-year increase, in North America.
