THE GAME’S THE THING Card games, by their very nature, are handson affairs, and they’re a great way to pass the time with friends. But what do you do when you and your friends can’t be together? For Josip Markic, a student from Zagreb, Croatia, the ˊ answer lay in another hands-on device – his Bluetooth enabled phone. “Every day I go to college by train with a few of my friends,” he explains. “The journey lasts about 30 minutes, and in that time we usually play a very popular card game in Croatia called Belot or Bela.” This trick-taking game, which uses a 32-card Central European–suited deck, follows a complex set of rules. Markic and ˊ his friends have been enjoying Bela since their high school days, and they look forward to playing the game every day on the train. Some days, however, the train is very crowded and the friends can’t sit together to play. Markic ’s solution? Bluetooth technology. ˊ “I decided to program this game for mobile phones using Java ME Bluetooth API (JSR 82),” ˊ explains Markic. “It is a multiplayer game, and two, three or four players are able to play using Bluetooth enabled phones.” Markic says that it’s the combination of ˊ Bluetooth technology and Sony Ericsson’s SDK for Java ME Platform that made the solution possible. “Now we play Bela all the time – also when we have some boring courses in college. All my friends are asking me to send them this game. Bluetooth technology helped me to play.” For his winning entry, Markic received a prize ˊ package from sponsor Sony Ericsson worth more than US$1,100.
