IN THE NEWS NEWS All the news that’s fit to transmit from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group . . . Bluetooth SIG members have always All Hands to Tokyo Make plans now for the first-ever Bluetooth SIG All Hands Meeting in the Asia-Pacific region. It’s fitting that this event, the largest SIG event of the year, should take place in Japan, a leader in technology innovation. had good reason to attend the annual All Hands Meeting, but this year they can expect something special. Scheduled for 21-23 April in Tokyo, it’s the first AHM to be held in APAC. “This is a region that’s crucial, both as a huge emerging market for Bluetooth enabled products and as the place where most of those products are actually produced,” says Mike Foley, executive director of the Bluetooth SIG. “With APAC being the center of gravity of Bluetooth technology production, with most new product listings coming out of the region and with exciting research taking place at APAC member companies, this is a great chance for members outside the region to work with their APAC colleagues and learn how Bluetooth technology is growing there, as a technology and as a business.” More than half of Associate members are in APAC; 75 percent of products on the 2008 EPL came from there. The first BQTF opened in China last year, which is expected to make it easier and faster for Chinese firms to qualify their Bluetooth enabled products. Japan, meanwhile, has the highest number of registered users because most Bluetooth SIG Associate members are large companies based in Japan. There’ll be plenty to talk about, with Bluetooth low energy and high speed technologies expected to enter the market this year. Looking ahead, there also will likely be some new developments to the Bluetooth technology core specification as well as announcements from member companies. Committees and working groups often hold face-to-face meetings at an AHM, so this is yet another opportunity for individuals to connect in person. To accommodate travel needs, this year’s AHM will be two days of meetings instead of the usual three, plus the customary training day. In addition, all main meeting sessions will include simultaneous language translation. And as always, members will have plenty of fun and fellowship, with opportunities to explore the rich textures of Tokyo, from its many cultural touchstones to the subtleties of its cuisine.
