Signature - Q2, 2008 - (Page 46) Wacky Apps | By Mike Sharsky | Q2 ’08 Today’s children are comfortable with technology from an early age, but like children throughout the ages they still crave intuitive and imaginative bonds with family and friends. This is particularly true of children with chronic health conditions that keep them hospitalized, or those who, for various reasons, are away from home. Later this year, a Dutch firm plans production of a doll-like device that may help such children maintain long-distance emotional connections. Waag Society, a new-media and technology company in Amsterdam, has been developing the Scottie. About the size of a human hand, it can transmit colors and vibrations to another Scottie using wireless technology. While production versions will use other wireless modes, Waag began the project knowing Bluetooth technology was the ideal way to test prototypes. “When you’re developing a tool like this, the only really good connection we could get was a Bluetooth connection,” says Robbert Woltering, Waag’s commercial director. The Scottie has a sensor in one of its “feet” that can be passed over any colored surface. That Scottie can then send the color to a distant cousin, signaling a mood or reminding a loved one of a memory associated with the color. Squeeze the Scottie and one held by another person will vibrate, offering tactile comfort. “Maybe children just want to let their mothers at home know that they’re OK,” Woltering says. “It’s almost like you’re shaking hands.” The Scottie adds sensory depth to the contact already possible through phone calls, e-mails and text OK, so you’ve created your own novel application of Bluetooth technology messages, he notes. or know of someone who has. This vaguely human-shaped blob may look like a toy, but its Dutch developer hopes it will become a tool that brings emotional comfort to children separated from loved ones. It’s a way to care that would not exist without Bluetooth technology, which was vital during prototype testing in hospitals.
