ROCKABYE, BABY What better soundtrack for a good night’s sleep than a custom mix of pop faves stored on an iPod? Four-year-old Chloe Lundstedt likes her iPod so much that she wanted it to play all night. Her father, Cameron, was happy to oblige. A Devonport, Tasmania–based graphic designer and Bluetooth technology user since 2001, Cameron has developed what is quite possibly the world’s only Bluetooth enabled 2-in-1 music system and baby monitor. “When Chloe would not go to sleep because she wanted to listen to her iPod, I came up with the solution of using … a Motorola Bluetooth Hands-free Speaker T305,” explains Cameron. He connected the iPod to his computer in an adjacent room and used a Logitech Bluetooth enabled MX900 wireless hub to transmit the audio signal to the T305 in his daughter’s room. “Then I had the problem of her waking up in the middle of the night needing her drink reﬁlled, so I made use of a program from TeamSpeak (v. 2.0.33.7) … as a way to listen to what Chloe needed while I was on a headset in the ofﬁce,” notes Cameron, who often works through the night. “Utilizing a Bluetooth hub, I made it able to send and receive speech from one room to another. I made a hotkey to mute my output so when I am talking to (clients) I am not disturbing her sleep. I use the button to ‘call in’ to her room when she needs something.” The system is working quite well for the Lundstedt family, which includes 2-year-old Alex, who enjoys the music as much as Chloe. Cameron likes the ﬂexibility that the wireless connection allows. “The advantage of using Bluetooth over a traditional intercom system and an iPod docking station is the size of the system. Since the T305 is utilized in car systems, it’s quite small and portable, so it can be placed where it needs to be,” he explains.
