IN THE NEWS NEWS All the news that’s fit to transmit from the Bluetooth Special Interest Group . . . In December of 1996 several What’s Your Story? To help illustrate 10 years of Bluetooth technology, Promoter and Associate members are invited to submit short stories from their wireless histories. In this excerpt, Jim Kardach shares the origins of the name “Bluetooth.” companies decided to form a Special Interest Group to standardize the industry around a short-range radio link. Within Intel I had started a program called Business-RF, Ericsson had a program called MC-Link, and Nokia had a program called Low Power RF. It soon became apparent that we needed a single name for the technology. I proposed that the SIG be called by the code name “Bluetooth” until the marketing group could come up with a formal name. “Bluetooth” was borrowed from the 10th-century Danish king Harald Blatand (Bluetooth), who was famous for uniting Scandinavia. Ericsson’s Sven Mathesson first mentioned Harald to me. I later read a book that showed a picture of a giant rock, or runic stone, which depicted the chivalry of Harald Bluetooth. I made a PowerPoint image of the stone where Harald held a cell phone in one hand and a notebook in the other. I also “translated” the runes: Harald united Denmark • and Norway. Harald thinks that mobile PCs • and cellular phones should seamlessly communicate. In April, the board met and chose PAN (for personal area networking) as the official name. But about a week later, it was discovered that no trademark search had been done on PAN or on the backup name RadioWire. The only name we could launch with that had a trademark search done on it was Bluetooth. Needless to say, the code name turned out to be pretty good, took hold in the press and, after a while, became synonymous with short-range radios. Jim Kardach was instrumental in the development of Bluetooth technology and the formation of the Bluetooth SIG. A member of the Bluetooth SIG Hall of Fame, Kardach is senior principal engineer within the Intel Mobile Products Group.
