Signature Q3 2008 - (Page 11) China’s Year of the BQTF An Interview with Dr. Song Qi Zhu Mainland China’s first Bluetooth Qualification Test Facility (BQTF) opened this year at Beijing’s State Radio Monitoring Center (SRMC). SIGnature spoke with Song Qi Zhu, vice director of SRMC’s Equipment Testing Division, about what this means for the wireless market in China. Tell us about the SRMC. The SRMC oversees the development of all wireless communications in China, such as RF testing, SAR and Bluetooth systematic platform and conformance testing and certification. Our laboratory includes highly specialized Bluetooth testing equipment. Our facility manages a network of testing centers and integration of sources on testing and certification. What was the main reason SRMC chose to become a BQTF? There has been very rapid development in the Bluetooth industry in China in recent years, so clearly there is a growing need. We also made the decision to apply for BQTF status based on information from the Bureau of Statistics demonstrating the growing number of manufacturers of Bluetooth enabled products in China. One of our main goals is to provide our services to these manufacturing facilities and help them develop their industries here, as well as to standardize and streamline the overall qualification process. What benefits will a BQTF bring to China? As Bluetooth technology continues to mature, it will become increasingly popular and affordable for consumers. I think the most important example of this is cell phones – a technology that is becoming inseparable from Bluetooth technology. I foresee the industry’s future as being very robust, indeed. Offering an internal certificated testing service to Bluetooth equipment manufacturers in China provides more rapid testing, saving valuable time in the certification of products. Our laboratory will utilize the testing experience we’ve gained over the past decade to assist customers in improving the quality of products and their technical capabilities, ensuring the highest quality of Bluetooth enabled products in China. Will this encourage more manufacturers to qualify their products? “One of our goals is to provide our services to manufacturing facilities and help them develop their industries in China.” — Dr. Song Qi Zhu, on the Beijing SRMC becoming a BQTF Yes, definitely. There are a lot of companies and manufacturers that will have a growing need for certifications for Bluetooth technology, so I think our presence will be seen as a very convenient service for them. Until recently the situation in China was that most production facilities were using older versions of the Bluetooth specification. But now more manufacturers are finding themselves in need of newer technology, and this is where I see the greatest potential use for our services. Senior Engineer Song Qi Zhu, Ph.D., is vice director of ETD at the Beijing SRMC. He spoke with Richard Baimbridge, who lives and writes in Shanghai. Bluetooth Special Interest Group | 11
