Signature Q3 2008 - (Page 26) Bluetooth Wireless Explorer | By Colleen Marble | Q3 ’08 Ever wish you could save the world using the telekinetic ability of comic book characters like Captain Universe and Brainiac? Or maybe you’d rather use such powers for personal gain – say, moving office donuts to your cubicle using nothing but brain waves, like Dilbert’s Asok the intern. That day may be coming. NeuroSky, Inc., a San Jose, Calif.-based innovator in wearable biosensor and signal processing systems, has created a way to translate brain waves into digital signals for simple brain-computer interfaces. At the core of NeuroSky’s wireless MindSet headset is the ThinkGear-EM sensor, which monitors electroencephalogram (EEG) signals through the user’s forehead. The system translates the EEG signals into mental states, such as attention, drowsiness and meditation. The MindSet sends that data via Bluetooth technology to platforms, such as game consoles, cars, computers and cell phones, where it can be used to, say, move screen images or select music based on mood. Stanley Yang, NeuroSky’s chief executive officer, sees commercial opportunity for this technology in three areas: entertainment (gaming, toys and music), wellness (meditation and stress reduction) and automotive (environmental and audio control). “These biotech sensors are wearable and can be placed anywhere on a body,” he explains. “They can transmit human emotions and send signals to virtually anything.” Yang envisions a future with mind-controlled devices for applications such as education, training, market research, transportation and industrial safety. NeuroSky develops the sensors and supporting technology for companies that bring the end products to market. “The MindSet headset is commercially available through OEM partners and usually bundled with a game cartridge,” Yang says. Let the mind games begin. Visit neurosky.biz for more information. Mind Games Few humans (OK, none) have perfected the ability to use mind to move matter. But California company NeuroSky uses Bluetooth technology to move us a step closer, with sensors that decipher the wearer’s mental state and use it to manipulate images, music selections and more. Experience More People everywhere are using Bluetooth technology to expand the human frontier. Tell us about them! We’ll share their stories in future issues.
