Signature Q3 2008 - (Page 31) GET IN THE GAME Tired of the old “click-and-drag” routine? You might want to check out the work of Matthias Shapiro, an interactive designer working with Veracity Solutions, Inc., in Salt Lake City, Utah. After partnering with Veracity on some of the technical details and building off the work of Brian Peek and other software developers, Shapiro has developed a pair of wireless multipoint gloves that work with the Wii remote controller’s infrared cameras to manipulate virtual objects on screen via a Bluetooth wireless technology link. “The Wiimote and the Bluetooth technology are a bit out of step from what we normally do,” explains Shapiro, who notes that Veracity Solutions is known for its medical and financial software solutions. “We’re looking at taking this [solution] – the ability to pick up infrared light literally from across the room – [and] using it to help people coordinate movement.” For Shapiro, Bluetooth technology was a key enabler of the final solution. “The project … was running fairly heavy visualization at 80 to 90 frames per second,” he says. “It took a little [bit] of binding magic to make the stream update the user interface in a fast way, but once we had that, we had very, very quick response. We never had any latency. [Bluetooth technology] was great for doing simple motion-capture type stuff.” Shapiro’s solution – based on Microsoft’s Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) and honored with third place at the MIX ’08 Show Off competition – was named winner of SIGnature’s January ’08 Get in the Game contest. Shapiro received a Sony PLAYSTATION 3 and SIXAXIS prize package valued at US$900 from the Bluetooth SIG. If the Glove Fits An interactive designer developed this winning user interface with a Wii remote controller, a pair of battery-operated gloves and some clever WPF coding. The system gives new meaning to the term “hands-on computing.” Dream What do you wish were Bluetooth enabled that isn’t?
